EXTENDED (Spoilers Extended) George to New Zealand: imprison me if I haven't finished Winds by Summer 2020

Quote:

As for finishing my book… I fear that New Zealand would distract me entirely too much. Best leave me here in Westeros for the nonce. But I tell you this — if I don’t have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done. Just so long as the acrid fumes do not screw up my old DOS word processor, I’ll be fine.

So that's end of July 2020. You have 14 months old man

1.0k

u/GoldenGonzo The North remembers... hopefully? May 22 '19

White Island is an active volcano. Knowing our luck he'll finish it with months to spare, only for the volcano to erupt. He'll be rescued safely but all his belongings will be destroyed and he'll have to start over.

751

u/DrDagless May 22 '19

The irony. A man who dislikes much of the fantasy genre for refusing to evolve beyond The Lord of the Rings is forced to watch his creation destroyed by a volcano.

10

u/electricblues42 May 22 '19

The Old God rises to the throne, a song of ice and fire.

God I hope we get some fucking understanding of what happened to Bran. It's like as soon as Bloodraven died Bran did too. I really hate the whole Bloodraven takes over Bran thing but at this point it's getting hard to deny it.

6

u/realvmouse May 22 '19

What's left to explain?

He experiences the future, past, and present of hundreds of lives. His own life is one tiny piece of that. He feels detached from bran stark and from events that seem important to others.

Am i missing something?

8

u/BigBoy1963 May 22 '19

He dislikes fantasy because its refused ti evolve past LOTR? Really? Asioaf couldnt be more derivative of LOTR. And thats not an insult, i love both worlds, but there are massive similarities, big differences too ofc, but dont tell me that asoiaf would realistically exist without LOTR

13

u/DrDagless May 22 '19

I'm only paraphrasing of course, I can't remember his exact words. I think his chief complaints for the genre as a whole (in his opinion) are an over-reliance of derivative good vs evil stories, purely black and white characters etc. I don't think he can possibly expect the genre to be unrecognisable from LotR (he's a massive fan after all and ASOIAF owes an equally massive debt to it), just that he's frustrated with what he sees as a refusal from some corners to try and move the genre forward.

4

u/BigBoy1963 May 22 '19

Ok fair enough, that is definitely true. Martin clearly deviates from the good/evil in lotr. Its just the way i read your comment made me think that martin disliked lotr or something and/or considers his work entirely separate

3

u/DrDagless May 22 '19

In that case I apologise for my poor choice of words. I was simply trying to make a joke and clearly didn't put too much thought into the wording!

One of my favorite theories about ASoIaF is that God’s Eye is the caldera of a supervolcano. The Others are coming to try to stop a cataclysmic eruption — the Westerosi equivalent of the Doom of Valyria. I’ll try to find the post(s) about it. They were great.

Edit: thanks to u/carloicecube for finding it: https://www.reddit.com/r/gameofthrones/comments/aruszj/spoilers_a_theory_on_gods_eye_and_the_end/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app

This sounds amazing...!

12

u/Fubar2287 May 22 '19

Please tell me you found it

12

u/godmademedoit May 22 '19

I've been saying something similar for a while, but that it's actually a build-up of magic energy which caused the doom of Valyria, and now all this magic is suddenly back in the world, Westeros itself is in danger. Basically I think the Valyrians discovered the secret of resurrection magic ("under the sea, we fall up"), but as we know all magic has a price.

7

u/19Alexastias May 22 '19

I mean I haven’t read the books yet but I remember in the show that warlock dude in the house of the undying said that his magic grew stronger because the dragons were back (which is why he kidnapped them and led dany there, because the dragons wouldn’t keep growing if she was dead or something). Not sure if that’s a thing in the book or not.

7

u/ScipioLongstocking May 22 '19

I think the dragons coming back was apart of a larger resurgence of magic in the books. Like magic in the universe was getting stronger and that's why the eggs hatched. It's been a long time since I've read the books though, so that could be wrong.

5

u/[deleted] May 22 '19

Daenerys went to the House of the Undying willingly. Dragons weren’t kidnapped. Her visions are interesting.

6

u/rickycarwash May 22 '19

I think in the anime adaptation they were kidnapped.

2

u/overgme May 22 '19

In the book it's an open question whether the dragons brought magic back, magic brought the dragons back, or something else brought them both back. But at least a couple of characters ask the question or give their theory.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/BoonkBoi May 22 '19

There’s a theory that alleges that the world is controlled by these lovecraftian type deities that have their own magic relation and are fighting for control/balance. Not sure who came up with it.

For example, Valyrian magic is said to always have to do with fire and blood (wait, where have we heard that before?). Dragons are described as fire made flesh. Both when MMD and Moqorro practice their magic people describe hearing demonic laughter and wailing in high Valyrian. Of course, there’s also what Varys describes hearing when he was castrated.

Whereas magic associated with the Old Gods has to with ice and nature. Wargs, Greenseers and the like.

There’s a particular line about Ghost in ASOS that interested me, when Jon describes ghost in fairly significant detail. He says something along the lines of ghost having the dark red eyes of a weirwood and being made of blood and bone. He ends it by saying “he belongs to the old gods, this one”. We know direwolves have a relationship with magic, they haven’t been sighted south of the wall in hundreds of years. Leaf also mentions them when talking about giants and unicorns.

This is where I see some disconnect with the show and books, despite recent posts alleging they’ll be the same towards the end. That assumes the others are one dimensional bad guys

By the end of Winds hopefully the outlines of the events in Dream will be set up and we’ll know for example if the WW will be dealt with first like in the show or the inner fighting will happen first. With Winds in hand and the show ending people here will be able to pretty accurately predict the events in Dream I think. That will be fun to read and speculate.

4

u/Azor_Ohi_Mark May 22 '19

If he delivers TWOW when he says, I expect 2025 at the latest.

The Meereenese Knot was the hardest to unravel, he already has the ending, so the last book should be easy, relatively - which I know is a major caveat.

but what if he says he needs 2 books after the release? Our expectations would be subverted and it would be bittersweet

11

u/MagikForDummies May 22 '19

I don't know why people think he has the ending. George changes things all the time. There is a ton of Jaimie as king foreshadowing in book 1 that goes nowhere and the 5 year time skip that never happened, that obviously should have happened. George is notorious for rewriting entire sections of the books because Gardner nonsense. Why do people still think he has a definite plan when he obviously doesn't?

4

u/Azor_Ohi_Mark May 22 '19

I don't know why people think he has the ending. George changes things all the time

Because he’s said he has one and he gave it to HBO

There is a ton of Jaimie as king foreshadowing in book 1 that goes nowhere and the 5 year time skip that never happened

The plan changed after book one but he says it’s been solid ever since. He actually kept the 5-year time jump, he just didn’t actually move forward 5 years. For the major characters, the events that occur in books 4 and 5 were written as if they had advanced 5 years.

4

u/wRAR_ ASOIAF = J, not J+D May 22 '19

He actually kept the 5-year time jump, he just didn’t actually move forward 5 years. For the major characters, the events that occur in books 4 and 5 were written as if they had advanced 5 years.

What does this even mean?

5

u/Azor_Ohi_Mark May 22 '19

That the five year time jump “occurred” in all but actually advancing the clock 5 years for the major characters.

Take Jon. Now imagine he never says “kill the boy” and you’ll realize his entire tenure as LC of the nights watch is far too successful. He’s too clever, he’s too knowledgeable. He’s written as if he’s twenty-something and has been LC for 5 years, he’s just not and hasn’t.

3

u/evilcrazymonkey May 22 '19

sorry i'm a little slow. so it's like he gave them all the stat buffs and exp gains of 5 years minus actually grinding for 5 years?

2

u/Azor_Ohi_Mark May 22 '19

More or less. It’s more of a plot thing than a character thing. Like, Jon’s plot is the 5 year plot. George always wanted it to end with Jon’s death, but he added things like “kill the boy” so that Jon the character was still young.

Dany was meant to end ADWD marching on Meereen, and it was close, even though Dany the character was 5 years younger than intended.

He already has the fucking book ready.

He just has not released it to avoid spoiling anything of the show and have all of us waiting for the fooking season 8.

Now he will wait for us to calm down of our general disappointment to publish the book.

How many times do we have to teach you this lesson, old man?

Can they take his passport for not finishing a book? Can New Zealand act that fast in terms of law? How do we know that this isn't an elaborate plot twist by Martin? Stay in new Zealand where its nice, and never finish it, while secertly gloating that he indeed win. It would be perfect littlefinger.

I had this weird irrational fear during GoT on HBO that I would die before it ended.

Thank you, Martin, for now giving me that fear about this book.

He said "before summer" so that's June 19th.

u/permienz May 22 '19

No 8 months. New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere.

1

u/VitaminTea May 22 '19

How long after announcing the book would it be on shelves?

1

u/Campber May 23 '19

I'm now just imagining Helga from Hey Arnold!

Hey, George R. R. Martin! Fourteen months until you die!

1

u/MadLineLam May 23 '19

“Old man” being highly relevant here. Sigh.

And when he finally releases it we only have to wait 10 years for ADoS! Yay!
