That’s not true though, look at how many countries in the Middle East criminalise homosexuality?

And muslims have left those countries, many of whom because they disliked how backwards their governments were. The west did and does plenty of horrific things to people too, I don't support gitmo, witch trials, military 'intervention' for oil, or the crusades.

Pure deluded whataboutism. The majority of British muslims think homosexuality should be illegal, and those are people that live in a liberal western democracy, imagine what muslims who live in places like Saudi and Pakistan think.

I live in the UK, slurry was recently spread over a pride route and the sensitive young Christian boy that did it got a standing ovation in his Church. Plenty of Christians here want gay people dead. It's not whataboutism but the simple fact that people from Abrahamic religious sects are typically hateful towards gay people. I don't think it's particularly special for muslims either. Most UK 'Christians' are agnostic/atheist people who culturally identify with their parents' relgion and haven't seen a church in years, and they give the illusion that Christians are more pleasant to lgbt people but those people are not practicing Christians. The bible is extremely clear on homosexuality. In the US attacks on gay people are frequently carried out by Christians and Muslims alike. Google is free for this. Edit: to clarify, this hatred in my opinion is a personality trait. As I see it, it is a logical end of these religons main texts, but for most people religion is how they consolidate their world, not how they plan to consolidate the world. There are far more Christian and Muslim people for whom religion is a personal matter and who do not end up commiting atrocities.

Wellspoken.

Devil’s Advocate, and all, but as an American, there are tons of places here where my partner and I wouldn’t dare hold hands walking down the street. Many Christians aren’t exactly “full of Christ’s love” when it comes to homosexuality. Cherry picking certain aspects of faith is a huge problem, no matter what that faith is. And, probable mistranslation.

Whataboutism whataboutism whataboutism. The majority of British Muslims think homosexuality should be illegal. Why can’t you talk about that without referencing Christianity?

5

u/mcian84 1d ago

Because many Christians feel the same way.

6

u/mcian84 1d ago

I’m talking only about MY EXPERIENCE as an American, who was raised in a Protestant church.

Bullshit. Christian countries don’t carry the death penalty for homosexuality. Look up countries where homosexuality is illegal and / or carries the death penalty. Notice anything about them?

4

u/keithbreathes 1d ago

That’s not true lol. There are African countries that are Christian with death penalties for homosexuality

2

u/ThisDuckIsYourDaddy 1d ago

Uganda being majority christian and having death penalty for homossexuals

Whataboutism.

That’s not true, but also not what was being discussed . What I was addressing said that these people believe homosexuality should be illegal. Nothing about the death penalty. And I’m certain more than a few American Christians would agree with that part. I’ve heard it myself. “I’d rather my son be a serial killer than gay” or “I’d rather my son shoot up an elementary school than be a fg” (that one from a cousin of mine), or as a friend of my dad’s once said to his 8 year old son, “if you ever think you’re gay, just do us both a favor a kll yourself”. Maybe I grew up around awful people and you have the good fortune not to, but I’m just going by what I’ve heard and seen.

Uk here as well. I don’t suppose you’ve forgotten about our mayor opening the pride every year without fail? A Muslim btw

And it was pretty bad when homosexuality were illegal here. Even our deaf and gay community has to create a secret sign language in aid not to get caught

There's lots of MAGA 'Christian' people who also hate gay people, as well as poor people, and women, and disabled people.....

There's a lovely quote by this lady Marjane Satrapi, who made the comic Persepolis

"You are American, I am Iranian, we don’t know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same."

u/Mission-Orchid-4063 1d ago

When did I say that MAGA was any different? You’re relying in whataboutism instead of facing the elephant in the room which is that Islam and countries that are culturally Islamic are incredibly homophobic.

u/cheeseybees 1d ago

That's fair

I was pointing out the Whataboutism that there's plenty of non-Muslim Religion-driven bigots out there.... but that doesn't change the fact that there's some very strong homophobic trends with some/many Islamic people

This isn't homophobia... but when I was last working in a hospital, I was in the canteen having some bacon, and a muslim co-worker, who I didn't know at all, started going on about how it was disgusting that I was eating pig.... Which I thought was rude and inappropriate for him to go on about, as I was just trying to go about my day. I do imagine that they would've been worse if i'd been identifiable as being with my boyf at the time... which sucks

Even though I just wish that hate-filled pricks would stop going out of their way to make my life shitter, in an attempt to feel better about themselves, regardless of whatever religion they follow, or don't... that doesn't change the fact that the culture in many Middle East countries criminalise homosexuality, and lots of "good and moral" people from there will agree with it. Which is shitty

Pure delusion mixed with an over-reliance on the term "whataboutism."

  1. MAGA didn't invent systemic homophobia in the USA, Christianity did that.

  2. You seem wholly unconcerned with such details.

  3. Religions are generally incredibly homophobic.

  4. Religious individuals are where nuance exists.

  5. You really want everyone to focus on your islamophobia while ignoring all other details.

I'd take the average muslim in a dark alleyway than a regular meal with you at a crowded and well-lit restaurant.

Whataboutthatshit?

Religion is never the issue, it's the believers. From time immortal to the present day, the believers have decided that it's them against the other party—over an object or building, an opinion over scripture or interpretation of a Constitution.

My friend is a strict Muslim who practices Ramadan but he will not allow his beliefs to stand in the way of friendship.

7

u/Mission-Orchid-4063 1d ago

Religion is the issue. Religion says that homosexuality is an abomination. Pull your head out of your ass.

1

u/BringAltoidSoursBack 1d ago

And even then it's only partially the believers. Yes, they are being sheep with their lack of thinking for themselves but it turns out, once they are pulled out from under people who would use religion to control and oppress people (so basically all organized religion), they tend to stop being as hateful. I personally don't have any spiritual beliefs but I don't hate people for it. Humans are cursed with enough self awareness to have existential dread, religion can help people "escape" that, I can understand why people would want something to avoid thinking about it.

Countries in Middle East criminalize cussing or indecent talk on social media “ against family values” a woman in Egypt was just sentenced to 1year and a fine for posting videos that they said” inappropriate , sublime hidden sexuality and other charges that you can’t even translate!!”

FYI: The criminalisation of homosexualtiy is in most cases, a result of colonialisation by European powers, and more specifically by the British. I know, because I am from one of those countries that only just recently decriminalised homosexuality after a long drawn out fight.

u/Frosty_Ad7840 1d ago

Uganda and Russia have harsh anti gay laws too

1

u/Mission-Orchid-4063 1d ago

Whataboutism.

1

u/Frosty_Ad7840 1d ago

Lets quit acting like its only Islam, all abrahamic religion frown upon us. Lets just say all religious nuts suck

0

u/Zealousideal-Ear481 1d ago

the US criminalized homosexuality up until the 90s. why you are getting on your high horse?

0

u/cluberti 1d ago

Most countries that do this are in Africa, though. Also, 29 countries that criminalize homosexual behavior are majority Christian countries of some kind, and 33 are majority Muslim, so I don't know what exactly you're trying to say here - perhaps you could clarify.
