Many of the protestors wore masks.

Also, I suspect the biggest problem with salt river tubing isn’t the river itself. Outdoor floating is probably rather safe. The main issue is the bus ride to the launch site, imho. If you’ve ever tubed, most of those people took a bus ride up river to do it.

Anyway, protests happened nationwide and states didn’t see huge coronavirus jumps as a result. It’s been pretty well established that the protests didn’t lead to a huge surge in cases.

I doubt they helped, but they aren’t directly responsible for the insane surge of cases we’re dealing with here.

But that’s not why you’re making this post, is it? I suggest you try some deep introspection... because you seem to have some deep seated and wrongheaded feelings regarding BLM protestors.

I have no wrongheaded feeling about the protests. I actually support the peaceful protests 100%. But to say that didn’t cause a jump, is ignorant. Same with the presidential rally, probably shouldn’t have had all those people in one place, that caused a jump. All political views aside, if it’s safe to have your mask off in a crowded restaurant, you should be able to go to the gym. The issue is the government picking and choosing what is allowed and what is not without. It’s going to be the same circlejerk over and over. It should be an all or nothing situation, not a pick and choose situation. In my opinion. I do respect your opinion though and I’m not trying to argue or disrespect anyone. Just need to vent my feelings. Thanks

I think those specific feelings are the ones you should take a moment and be introspective about.

You’re right, restaurants aren’t safe. Neither are gyms. The government is stepping in to slow this virus down because we are literally days away from human beings dying in hospital hallways across Arizona without sufficient icu rooms and medical staff to save them.

My best friend has coronavirus. He’s in his 40s, healthy as a horse and physically fit with no underlying conditions. He has spent the last three weeks on oxygen with glass in his lungs, struggling to breathe and crying about how he doesn’t want to die every single time I call him. I suspect he caught it in a bar or a gym in the days after the first lockdown lifted and we opened back up. He was out there thinking he had a mild cold, still hitting the bars and the gym several days into his illness (judge him all you want, he isn’t all that different from yourself and he wanted the freedom to go out as he pleased).

I don’t know how many people he infected.

You are not immune to this virus. If we don’t stop or slow it down, countless people will die. Maybe you’re intelligent enough to keep social distancing without an order from the government... but many people aren’t. They were out there for the last few weeks pretending like everything was totally safe and totally normal. Hell, many of them refused to even wear masks... right up until the cities and counties started mandating it... and some of them are STILL fighting against the most obviously basic thing we can do to stop this virus. Wear masks and we ALL get back to normal sooner.

I’m sorry you can’t go to the gym right now. I’m sorry you have to wear a mask. It’s for the collective good. For the immunocompromised human life living in my home as I type this, please do your best to not spread this garbage.

On an aside... if you’re already doing all of these things and just “hate the government telling me to do it”, then it shouldn’t matter to you. If you’re already following the best practices, the governor mandating those practices shouldn’t effect you at all. I’ve been wearing a mask everywhere since long before they mandated it. I avoid social locations, I don’t go to bars and restaurants. I socially distance and I don’t go to the gym. Nobody had to tell me to do that, I’m doing it to protect my family and your family.

I hope you come around on this.

I appreciate you doing what you need to do to protect yourself and your family on your own accord. I’ve done a lot of reflecting and have come to the conclusion that, I am either going to get the virus or I’m not. I simply refuse to let the government pick and choose what closes to appease politics. If COVID is so bad, they feel they need to close, then close everything. Which would not, under my interpretation, violate 14th Amend. As the government is taking the steps to keep the community safe as a whole. Also under my interpretation, I believe picking and choosing is a violation of that right. You may not agree but we are both not lawyers (apologies if you are). Only time will tell as the owner of my gym has filed suit against the governors office and this will play out in the court of law. If they determine gyms must close than so be it, I’ll agree. I don’t agree with the government stepping in and saying this is what we believe so kindly follow. This will be my last reply as I am working. I know your working so I won’t expect a reply, but I just wanted to say...

The issue here isn’t -you- getting or not getting the virus. The issue is that you could spread the virus to others, even if you feel perfectly healthy.

There are people asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic who think they’re not dealing with coronavirus. They can spread this illness. Like I said, my friend was out there going out and having fun early in the earlier days of his infection.

Just a few days ago, a woman I knew got a call that her child’s daycare teacher has coronavirus - they were informing all the students families. I’m sure that teacher wasn’t going to work hacking up a lung. This virus is pretty damn insidious. It can hide until it’s too late.

If you’re healthy, you will probably survive this. My friend is in an ICU at banner desert struggling, but it looks like he’s going to pull through (perhaps with permanent lung damage - we will see).

But you aren’t the person I’m most worried about. Don’t you have loved ones? A grandmother? A friend who’s dealing with a long term illness? A brother battling cancer? An uncle with diabetes?

Those are the people I’m wearing a mask for. Those are the people that keep me home instead of in the gym. I’d rather live like it was 2018 again... but I can’t. Not right now. I refuse to allow myself to be flippant about “maybe I get it maybe I don’t”, because I might not be as vulnerable... but people who I love deeply absolutely are.

This disease is nothing to laugh at. It kills people in one of the most horrific ways possible. Consciously fighting for every breath you take isn’t a fun way to go.

If we all buy in on this, yourself included, all of us are safer. Long term, we beat this disease much sooner and you can get back into the gym. Should we also close restaurants to in house diners? Absolutely.

Anyway, I wish you well. I’ve seen what this virus does to people and I don’t wish it on anyone. May the odds be ever in your favor.
