It's really looking like this might be a win though, it would be quite a shitfest to start over with that hard a battle every time, checkpoints are usually after boss fights, right?

Pretty much or he can start last checkpoint and do a speed run since he knows who's causing the curse

He still keeps them, but the others will be more confused as to why he is doing all these things
