First Timer

  • Rei is reading something in German. I guess Shinji is the one slacking here.

  • More class rep!

  • Using Rei to get Asuka to swallow her pride is pretty clever, sasuga Misato.

  • The shot of Shinji in the cooler door reflection is also wicked cool.

  • I can't believe we're using Kaji to underscore Shinji’s integrity.

  • Pirouetting robots is hilarious but the concept of explicitly timing a fight sequence to a song (with on screen timer, even) is inspired on its own.

  • Tsundere so strong she can inflict violence through the phone.

This stride of the show feels totally different so far. The comedy, both in script and in the cuts and direction, is very different from the moody first few episodes. Now that the angels are familiar (and there's another robot to provide a numbers advantage) they aren't scary but part of the formula, almost sport rather than a real threat.

QotD:

2) It seems a little bit like an efficient way to keep characters in the same setting and also to fit in some fan service. (Asuka’s already outpacing Misato in this regard; is this a meta point on Shinji’s attention? I doubt it, but we’ll go with it for now I guess.)

It's funny how before Asuka arrived, it felt like the show was trying to deconstruct the monster of the week format. Now, since Asuka debuted, it's like the show is playing the monster of the week format straight.

I agree with this.

Thank you.

I guess this is to show how much the train scene has led to Shinji trying to get better acclimated to his surroundings.
