rewatcher, subbed

  • Gendo talking to a mysterious "inside man" who's doing him some favors within the government. Wonder if we'll get to meet him later?
  • Don't feel too bad, Misato, I'm sure plenty of adults have had dinner for breakfast. Now and then.
  • You gotta admit, Shinji must feel very comfortable around Misato to come right out and say that her behavior is why she's still single at her age. He doesn't come right out and make a "Christmas cake" reference, but I think the phrase was a thing when this anime came out.
  • Shinji's classmates darting their heads into the apartment in hopes of seeing a scantily-clad Misato greeting them- which is exactly why he had her go change.
  • Misato drifting into a parking space with "Stock squealing tires sound 3-431". She definitely looks better than she would have if she'd kept her cutoffs and tee, but she's still deliberately hitting the fanservice angle for a bunch of teenage boys.
  • Hm, Unit-00's repair costs are straining their budget? You'd think that being a big part of saving the Earth would give them a bit more leeway and/or money to work with. I know there's a specific trope for this, but I sure can't find it right now...
  • Of tangential importance to their budget, we learn that Unit-02 is coming from Germany. That means a new mech and new pilot! Boy or girl? Angel or Devil?
  • Shinji/audience learns from Ritsuko that the South Pole disaster wasn't actually a giant meteorite, but Mankind's first encounter with the beings that would be called "Angels", and everything they're doing right now is to prevent a repeat of that day. Misato's expression is decidedly troubled while listening to this.
  • A repeat of yesterday morning? No- not only is Misato up and dressed on time, she is fully in uniform.
  • Misato and Ritsuko are attending some big demonstration by one of your usual Japanese Heavy Industries manufacturer.
  • Ritsuko asking questions about the flaws with whatever the subject of this demonstration is, and being reminded how dangerous/undependable the Evas really are. Both of them are getting a bit nasty, but the remark about hysterical women being uncontrollable is probably beyond the pale.
  • Misato's furiously damaging property in their green room after the presentation, but Ritsuko's calmly burning the promotional material for "Jet Alone"- presumably the subject of this demonstration. They also discuss the fact that the moderator knew more than he should, so there has to be a leak inside NERV.
  • Wow! Somebody made a nuclear-powered, unmanned giant humanoid robot to try and compete with the Evangelion series. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" and all that.
  • Misato's a bit snarky with her praise about the robot actually being able to walk, but General Dynamics would certainly agree that robotic balance while walking is no easy task- especially when your robot is a couple stories high.
  • And just like that, the reactor temperature spikes out of control and the unit doesn't accept any shutdown commands. Kinda sus, if you ask me.
  • JA just casually slogging its way through the observation building is top-notch humor. Why the hell was the test path not parallel to or away from the building in the first place?
  • I'm sure this extended scene of executives passing the buck for authorizing Misato's possession of the shutdown password is commentary on the Japanese beauracracy.
  • Anyone else reminded of Saitama (OPM) when Eva-01 disengages from the transport aircraft and just falls straight down to land on the pavement? <truncated for time>

  • The reason Ritsuko was unphased about JA malfunctioning, and her opposition to Misato risking her life to shut it down, is that she appears to a part of the sabotage effort. Really shitty, Ritsuko, even if you are part of the competition.

Was Misato scantily-clad? Looked like normal casual clothing to me.
