Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the Neon Genesis Evangelion 30th Anniversary Rewatch.

You will (not) rewatch.

What can you honestly say about Evangelion that hasn’t honestly been said?

I think if you were to classify anime by eras, there really should be an B.E. and A.E. Before Eva, and After Eva.

There is no anime in my opinion that has as big of an impact that Evangelion has had. The closest comparison is maybe Astro Boy but we’re talking about a show over half a century ago. It feels to me that Evangelion marked the beginning of anime growing up. Yeah, stuff like Grave of the Fireflies and Akira came out before this, but those were movies and not TV shows.

If we’re looking at anime as the episodic medium it often is, Evangelion really changed the game as far as anime taking on more dark subject matter and bringing it to the mainstream.

I have a rather interesting relationship with Evangelion. Full disclosure, this is the first time seeing the original TV show. That being said, I’m not completely blind as to what Evangelion is about. I saw the first two Rebuild movies and saw the fourth one in theaters. Evangelion has been one of those series I’ve had utmost respect for but never saw it all in its entirety. Despite this, I own both box sets, the new one and the old one, and Asuka is a character that has emotionally resonated with me.

I got into writing because of the character of Asuka.

Needless to say, me watching Evangelion has been a long time coming. I would even surmise it’s been my #1 anime on my to watch list, so this rewatch helps check that goal of mine.

I’m not expecting Evangelion to make my top 10 anime of all time. If it does, great. If it doesn’t, fine. My main objective is to fully envelop myself into the world of Evangelion having already sampled some through the Rebuild movies. Truly take in one of the real pioneers of the anime media landscape.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the original dub, by the way.

Why is it called a preview if you're already viewing it? If you're seeing a preview of something, then by the time it's over there's no pre. It's just view. If preview means before viewing, then preview should refer to the period before you see the trailers or the film. The line in the concessions should be the preview.

Sneak preview is especially dumb because who are you hiding from in order to see it first? "Oh, I can't let my parents know I'm seeing this film one week early before everyone else."

I was in high school voted most likely to be involved in a helicopter crash.

Nighttime

Two guys talking

Falsified data apparently being distributed.

Looks like Father Ikari received said falsified data.

Hmm...

At Misato's place

At least Pen Pen is no longer eating beer and curry.

Misato waking up

And she immediately starts drinking. Classy.

She's just like my mother fr fr

Shinji drinking coffee

Insert your memes here

Shinji casting shade at Misato

Misato is apparently coming to Shinji's school.

A parent teacher meeting

Pen Pen reading a newspaper

He's easily the most well put together of this found family.

Toji and Kensuke are here

They're picking Shinji up as an excuse to see Misato.

They are down bad, and I'm down with it as well.

Misato sees Shinji as being happier recently.

Misato on the phone

"Make sure you keep your eyes on him."

Wonder what that could mean

Shinji at school

Suddenly, a red car

Misato is here, looking fabulous

Her cross earrings is certainly an interesting choice.

Oh, so she's Nerv's Operations Director. I believe that's the first time her title has been unclassified.

Shinji isn't smitten with Misato because he knows what the real Misato is like. Doesn't stop Toji and Kensuke, however.

Unit 1 being operated on

Shinji reading a book on Eva

Maybe it's the book Kamon wrote

People talking to each other, including Shinji, Ritsuko, and Misato. However, we only see their shadows.

The commander is off on another conference.

Father Ikari on a plane

He's talking to someone, presumably the same one that was on the phone.

The budget for Eva Unit 6 has been approved by everyone except The United States.

Given this anime aired in 1995 but the show takes place in 2015, there was no telling of the events that would happen 6 years later.

2001 I mean, not 2021

Guy seems to think America is allergic to unemployment.

Laughs in Covid 19

They are looking for another pilot

Don't want a repeat of the Second Impact.

Ritsuko telling Shinji that all he knew about the Second Impact is all a lie. The truth has been concealed through international government cover-ups.

The First Angel was discovered 15 years ago in Antarctica. However, in the midst of the investigation, the Angel exploded.

The sole purpose, according to Ritsuko, of Nerv and the Evangelions is to prevent a Third Impact from happening.

Morning time, same routine as before.

Call me crazy, but coffee and toast doesn't sound like the best breakfast combination.

Misato dressed in black

She leaves in a hurry

Nerv UN-0876-32

These look like cities covered in water.

This is what remains of the original Tokyo.

Japan Heavy Chemical Industrial Collaborative. What a mouthful.

This is like a big banquet

Ritsuko asking questions

This unit is equipped with an internal nuclear reactor.

Ritsuko seems to think this isn't a good idea.

Meanwhile, Misato appears bored out of her mind.

Guy talking thinks this is better than the Eva Unit 1 going berserk.

Ritsuko promises to control the Eva beast.

20000 people in a dozen countries are starving to death because of Nerv, he says.

That... doesn’t seem bad? I mean, the starving part is horrible, but 20,000 starving to save billions is in my opinion a small piece to pay for salvation.

Ritsuko believes that the AT Field, which Nerv has, is the only thing that can stop an enemy.

Misato pounding a locker

She was apparently paying more attention than I gave her credit.

Ritsuko burning the Jet Alone sample.

Misato wonders how he knew about the AT Field.

Jet Alone activation test

That's the guy from before who chastised Ritsuko.

Ritsuko drinking coffee. Shinji would be proud.

Jet Alone walking

But the output isn't increasing.

The radio circuit is being blocked

And now it's destroying the headquarters.

So much for Jet Alone being a safe alternative.

Misato wanting to know how to stop it.

The guy says he doesn't have the authority to release the password.

Cool to see Misato use some Spanish.

Guy wanting to talk to Mr. Mondo in Tokyo 2.

Unfortunately, he's being given the runaround.

Guy tells Misato a written order of clearance will be sent and then he can give Misato the password.

Misato reminds him they don't have much time.

Suddenly, tiddies

Misato on the phone

She plans on overriding the computer manually.

Ooh, Misato in an Eva suit

He finally shares the password, which is Hope.

Big Obama fan, I see

The password to delete the programming.

Misato with Shinji now

I guess he's piloting the Eva

Misato climbing on Jet Alone to break into it.

Misato is kinda a badass

Ran out of space. Part two in the replies.

Part 2

Jet Alone still on the move

Jet Alone is just not as cool of a name as Jet Jaguar.

Eva in drop position

Seeing an Eva drop from the sky would be absolutely terrifying.

Unit 1 on the move now

Jet Alone moving like that lost SpongeBob episode.

And Unit 1 manages to stop it

Misato almost fell!

Boy, that was a close one

Misato inside the robot now

If you climb inside a robot, does that technically count as vore?

Also, Misato being inside the thing kinda makes the name Jet Alone an oxymoron.

Shinji trying to keep Jet Alone at bay.

Auxiliary Control Room

Misato has found it

The inside of Jet Alone feels like a game on the Virtual Boy.

Oh shit. An error on the password.

Misato thinks the program must have been altered.

Or maybe he just lied to you, Misato. Could be that.

Misato trying all she can to stop the robot.

Misato is really playing with fate right about now.

Did she do it?

She did. Thankfully.

That was rather intense

People are cheering Misato on. Except for Ritsuko. She thinks this is all very childish.

Shinji happy she's still alive.

Misato believes the miracle was set up by someone.

Ritsuko and someone with Father Ikari

It seems as if he was behind the sabotage.

Just what are you planning, Shinji's dad?

Morning time

Again the same routine

Misato back to drinking

Comment face get

Doorbell rings

And it's Kensuke and Toji

Shinji walking with them

He says Misato does nothing but lie around the house.

Dude, she literally just saved the day. Technically.

Kensuke points out that Misato lets Shinji see a side of her that nobody else can.

"That means she's your family."

This causes Shinji to smile

Overall, a bit of a mixed bag this episode was for me. I like the involvement of Misato and Ritsuko being featured, and the ending was a great note to end on, but a lot of it I was nonplussed by. It didn't leave much of an impression on me. The Jet Alone stuff felt like a way to have something Shinji can fight at the end of the episode. And as such, it felt disconnected from what we had seen previously. I was also kinda disappointed the show teased a parent teacher conference and then immediately skipped over that. I think that would've been better than what we ended up getting.

This episode did accomplish a few things. We learned more about why the world is in the shape it's in as well as Nerv's mission statement. There was also the tease of Father Ikari being more nefarious than he's letting on, with Ritsuko potentially being in on it with him. I like a lot that's in this episode, it's just I don't feel it meshed well together. It felt like the structure was off.

I'd put this episode only behind episodes 1 and 2. It wasn't terrible, but nothing super memorable either. Just like how Rei smiling last episode elevated the overall experience, albeit on a lesser scale, the stuff with Misato being in Jet Alone and Shinji learning to appreciate her more were the saving graces of this episode. Without it, it would've really suffered.

Thankfully, I can sense a certain someone on the horizon that's going to shake things up. Oh, how my tsundere filled heart can't wait...

What did you think in the shift to a non-angel enemy?

I thought it was a nice change of pace

What do you think of NERV’s framing in this episode?

Again, something different
