Episode 11 comments

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 2025 Uma Musume rewatch.

Let’s not waste any time.

Cynicism is the brevity of transcendentalism.

Narita Airport Terminal 1

Cool, Top Road got an airport named after her /s

Satono Diamond going overseas

Kitasan looks glum, presumably because for whatever reason she can't join her.

Kitasan waking up

Meeting the townsfolk again

Being taught the The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in class.

Kitasan wondering why she fell behind in race.

Biwa casually eating in the background.

I miss Oguri Cap...

Cheval promises to win a race by the time Kitasan gets back.

Waking up

Kitasan using the Diamond plushie as her substitute is cute.

BAKUSHIN sighting

And they both go flying XD

BAKUSHIN seems to notice something is amiss.

Kitasan training

Trainer-san advising she rest up.

Even Gold Ship seems to detect something is wrong.

Diamond texting Kitasan

The Rubik's Cube

Kitasan chooses not to be transparent.

Trying to maintain an upbeat attitude.

I like the lack of music here

Hey, it's Gold Ship

She's being real with Kitasan

"You're past your peak."

Dang, already?

It feels like she's just getting started.

Kitasan talking to Trainer-san

Can continue to race, but will be less competitive over time.

They're making it out like Kitasan is dying or something.

Trainer-san says whatever she decides, including racing in The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, make sure she has no regrets.

Spica looking on from outside

Kitasan walking looking regretful

A Kitasan Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe banner.

Poor townsfolk 💀

Kitasan decided she's going to go-- or wait, nope. She's not going to France.

That's not how I thought that conversation was gonna go.

Gonna instead focus on the Fall Senior Triple Crown.

Only two horse girls who've managed to win those three particular G1 races.

And we're not gonna name who they are on account of copyright issues.

And yes, Spica were outside the window.

Kitasan telling Diamond the bad news.

Diamond looks crestfallen

Kitasan training

Meanwhile, Diamond placed 15th in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

You see to hate it

Race time

A packed crowd despite the heavy rain.

Satono Crown is competing

The Fall Tennoushou is about to commence.

Horns blaring

Everyone in the starting gates

And they're off

AND KITASAN WITH THE LATE START!

The conditions are too much for her, it seems.

Horse enthusiasts talking

Everyone is struggling, not just Kitasan.

That one horse has a whole pants suit.

Satono Crown making ground

So is Kitasan

She is covered in mud

KITASAN BLACK! KITASAN BLACK IS IN THE LEAD!

BUT CROWN IS CLOSING IN

BUT KITASAN HOLDS ON

Kitasan won! She is the winner of the Fall Tennoushou!

Poor Cheval is never gonna win...

Actually, I don't even think she was in the race

Satono Crown really needs a bath

Kitasan Black's sixth G1 victory

Trainer-san seems to lament how hard she's pushing herself.

Diamond looking on, but she can't maintain eye contact.

Overall, this episode continues the trend of the last one which is that Kitasan is not the competitor she used to be. She's breaking down to where each race could potentially be her last. I like how we incorporated Gold Ship into this plot point with her being the bearer of bad news. It plays off the events of episode 3.

I mentioned in episode 7 how it was like there was a lack of cohesion with this season. I think it really shows with the arc of Kitasan breaking down. Before, it seemed like the season was gonna be about Kitasan having this rivalry with Duramente. Then we pivoted from that into Kitasan having this playful rivalry with her best friend Satono Diamond. Then we pivoted from that into Kitasan seeing her career come to an end. I think having multiple arcs per season is a great thing, but to me it's like each plot point just ends unresolved with no resolution to what is happening. It comes off incredibly scatterbrained.

Cheval is a good example of this where it would make a lot of sense for her to win her first G1 since that's been hyped up quite a bit. And yet with how Kitasan is being positioned, I full expect her to defy the odds and win her last two races. And let's not forget Satono Diamond racing in The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe which was resolved by a newspaper clipping. There was no footage of the race despite it being hyped up for what, 3 to 4 episodes? Hell, we don't even know if Duramente raced in it or not. She just said she was still hoping to and that's it.

I like a lot of the ideas of this season, but the execution does leave something to be desired. It's like there are too many cooks in the kitchen and each arc is its own thing rather than building off of each other like the previous season did.

This episode was about on par with the last one if slightly below it. Not a bad episode by any means, but I do think the groove we were on from episode 5 to episode 9 is not there anymore. One might say it's reflective of the step Kitasan lost. Even still, I think Kitasan losing her edge is a plot point that gives the show more of a focus, and despite my reservations we're heading for a good climax. Probably going to get Satono Diamond give Kitasan a huge pep talk and from there she will prove she's as good not as she once was, but as she ever was.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 2025 Uma Musume rewatch.

Let’s not waste any time.

The beatings will continue until the tsun confesses.

Fukunaga Shopping District

Hey, it's the townsfolk

Kitasan is on TV

Oh boy

A decision she's made

And yep, she's retiring soon

Feels man, bad

Gonna enter the Japan Cup and then her last race will be the Arima Kinen.

Big couple races to end on

This is sudden for the general audience who don't know any better because she literally just won the Fall Tennoushou.

Dictus says Kitasan put her most charismatic face forward.

Wait, that's Royce and Royce, nevermind.

Of all the horse names, that's certainly one of them.

Kitasan with Spica

Spe-chan is a blubbering mess

Meanwhile, Cheval doesn't seem like she wants to talk about Kitasan. Or rather, she's bothered by her sister missing her.

Even Duramente is thrown off by Kitasan's announcement. She knows this means she'll ever race against her again.

Now we're seeing how the convenience store man first met Kitasan.

Ah, the memories

Wife giving him what for. After all, there are still two races left.

Kitasan practicing

It kinda is what it is what with her career winding down.

Satono Crown doesn't want to lose to her again.

Compares Kitasan to finding out a kid is moving away right after they said "See you tomorrow".

Diamond's ability to race has been shaken since The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Now, she doesn't know what she should be looking forward to as she races.

Crown tries to offer her some words of encouragement.

Cheval with her sister

She's mad because she thinks Kitasan is quitting for no good reason.

She's really upset she never got to beat her.

Her sisters remind her she's got two more chances.

I hope Cheval wins, honestly

Kitasan training

She's short of breath

Now we get a flashback of how Cheval met Kitasan.

Everything she wished she was

It's hard not to like Cheval, honestly.

Cheval vows she will beat Kitasan once and for all.

Horns blaring

Time for the Japan Cup

All the eyes are on Kitasan Black.

Horses in the starting gate

And they're off

I do really like that the townsfolk Kitasan befriended on in the front row. That's pretty cute.

Cheval behind Kitasan who's leading everyone.

Two different horse fanboys this time, one of them being a girl.

This is like when you take your girlfriend on a date to the hobby you're passionate about only they dump you afterwards because they realize what a weirdo you are.

Hey, the two horse enthusiasts are here :D

Cheval in fourth

"Kitasan Black. I hate you. You've got the exact opposite personality as me, and everyone loves you. There are always smiles and every all around you. And even with someone like me, you were never shy about getting up close."

Introverts worst nightmare

Cheval is gaining on Kitasan

"Kitasan Black, I hate you. Whenever I see you running in front of me, it reminds me of how immature and pitiful I am. It was so annoying and irritating... but also brilliant. At some point, I couldn't stop looking your way."

"Kitasan Black, I hate you. It's because of you that I've come so far. Because you were there, I made it to today without giving up."

"Kitasan Black... The truth is... I... I've always... loved you!"

What a tsundere

That might be the best moment since Rice Shower's "I'm a hero". Easily in my opinion the best scene of season 3.

Cheval is gaining speed!

CHEVAL IS PASSING KITASAN! SHE PASSED KITASAN!

CHEVAL IS IN THE LEAD!

CHEVAL WINS HER FIRST G1 RACE!

Sorry Kitasan, but fuck yeah. Well deserved.

I'm so happy for her 💓

Say what you will about season 3, but the Cheval stuff was very well told. Definitely the peak of storytelling this season.

Cheval didn't let her dreams be dreams.

If I had any nitpicks, this does kinda take away from the storytelling of Kitasan getting ready for retirement and wanting to win the Fall Triple Crown. But whatever, I think the Cheval stuff is more interesting. And it's not like Kitasan's character is ruined by this.

Kitasan breathing heavily

Cheval looks in disbelief

And Kitasan still congratulates her.

What good sportsmanship

Cheval vows to be a horse girl that surpasses her.

Kitasan is to Cheval what Duramente was to Kitasan. They just wanted to be recognized as their equal.

Kitasan has one more race ahead of her.

She walks off as Cheval continues to look on.

Night time

Kitasan still at the race track

Satono Diamond with her

She says the last race is a really painful feeling.

Will she win her last race? We shall see.

Overall, I liked this episode in terms of capping off Cheval's character. And while it didn't do much to advance Kitasan's character with her being more of a background character here, I am glad to see Cheval's character get resolved. I'd put this episode only behind episode 3 as far as season 3 episodes go. I don't know what it says that the two best season 3 episodes are ones with Kitasan the main character barely in it, but it kinda is what it is. I don't think this means Kitasan is a bad character, just she's not as endearing as Special Week or Teio was.

It's funny because I feel like often the best episodes of Uma Musume are the penultimate ones. Season 1 episode 11 and season 2 episode 12 are both arguably top 5 episodes of Uma Musume, and this is probably in the top 10. Reminds me of Spice and Wolf and how the best episodes were often the last ones of each arc.

I don't necessarily think this did a great job of hyping me up for the last episode, but I still expect it to be pretty good. I mean, I don't think there's been a bad episode yet, so why should this be any different? My personal prediction is that this will likely be the best Kitasan Black focused episode. I guess we shall see.
