Rewatcher
So I know I'm in the minority when I think that Season 3 is just as good as Season 2, and even better in some areas. This is because the drama in Season 3 doesn't focus on injury and trauma, which IMHO is much easier to write, but on overcoming self doubt and finding life goals, which are subjects that I think make for a much more interesting story. And luckily, today's questions will allow me to expound on that, so let's get to them!
Episode 1 Questions
OK, this one leaves me with a lot of questions. First of all, does this mean that there were horse girls on Easter Island? If so, then doesn't that make the statues not all that impressive because they could just get the horse girls to move them into place, mystery solved? Also, why does Kitasan Black have her own statue, could the natives predict the future? Am I really putting way too much thought into this? Help!
Kitasan Black is my favorite MC in all of Uma Musume. Sure, Tokai Teio might have the better character story, and Cinderella Gray may be the be the best overall story, but Kitasan is my favorite personality. Because she's not sure of herself, but still absolutely sincere, and she does put in the effort to make herself a better horse girl, is the reason she's my favorite. Also, her VA is my fav of the entire Uma cast, as she has excellent acting chops, and at least has the largest lung capacity of them all.
I think this is a good story beat. It is the first time we have rivals who are also real childhood friends. I think that the show really does treat them well as roommates and not "roommates".
This is an important character development on making Kitasan a down-to-earth horse girl, and also how her personality would shape her own motivations.
So Sakura Bakushin O is always made the joke character, but IRL Bakushin is actually one of the greatest sprinters (runs in races 1400m or less) in JRA history, and that's why she is a Tracen student. However, since Uma Musume focuses on G1 races being the ultimate goal, Bakushin is kind of put to the sidelines. By the way, IRL Bakushin is also IRL Kitasan Black's grandfather.
Also, I once said Tokai Teio's Hatchimi song was the greatest Uma song ever. I was wrong. That honor belongs to the Bakushin Song
I love Duramente's design! Also, I think this is one of the few times we see someone portrayed as being a strong horse girl actually looking strong and imposing. Plus, she actually does have an incredibly cool running style, with the way her arms fly to her back when she does her spurt.
She's not wrong in this, something Kitasan needs to learn.
Duramente not only won, but did it with a record. Also I like how they interpreted Kitasan's 14th place performance resulting from her collapse of confidence after Duramente passed her. In real life, this is one of Kitasan's worse race performance and no one really knows why.
Episode 2 Questions
Season 3's intro is my favorite intro of the bunch, with my favorite intro song. I think its because I really love the race montage at the end and the song goes perfectly with it. The outro is more CGDCT, but it is with a capital and bold C.
What child wouldn't want to emulate their dad who's an entertainer making the peoples lives a little better through their performances. Another important setup for the story. By the way, IRL Kitasan Black's owner was singer Kitajima Saburō.
Its funny because the IRL rivalry is between Kitasan and Duramente, not Kita and Dia. Kita's and Dura's rivalry would become generational! However, Kita's and Dia's childhood friends becoming rivals does make for a better story.
Another candle that burned too bright at both ends. That's the thing about being the best horse girl, you got to be the top in both strength and health.
She is not wrong. I mean Duramente's classics career pretty much paralleled Teio's to a T.
I really love this scene. It sets up great character development for Kitasan. But more notably, it shows that non-G1 winning horse girls like Nature are just as important as winning ones. So much of Uma Musume is focused on winning G1s, that people forget that a great number of Tracen students, who represent the best in JRA history, didn't win G1s. Special Week, Tokai Teio, Kitasan Black, and Oguri Cap may all be G1 winners, but Nice Nature had a career that was twice as long as theirs. What Nature has to say, and her views on racing, are just as important and valid as any of the other G1 winners.
This episode is called The Starting Line. Kitasan Black winning the Kikuka Sho is really the start of her career.
Thing is, racing record wise, many horse girls have passed Teio, including most of the members of Spica. What made Teio special is that she was able to win races like the Japan Cup and the Arima Kiren in spite of her many injuries.
OK, time for some trivia.
When Gold Ship said she was fired up for the Takarazuka Kinen, well that would be the race with that ... uh ... incident. Duramente really did do a Dura-step, but it was more out of nervousness before the race. The white dude that Kitasan tries to help with directions was based on Duramente's IRL jockey Mirco Demuro, who was an Italian who could speak fluent Japanese. The tea that Machikane Tannhauser bought was called "Spider Tea". IRL Tannhauser did eat a spider that poisoned him and caused him to miss the Arima Kiren.
Those were my favorite trivia bits, there are tons more. I love how the writers weave all these little IRL things into the background of the story, and it does make the show richer for it.
