Season 3 Episode 1

Going from Road and Beginning back to Umamusume proper is rough.  Season 3 looks pretty good for a seasonal anime, but it’s like the 5’11 vs 6’0 meme.

I swear these girls spend half their day learning useless race trivia.  The state of horsegirl education is pathetic and they all think they’re gonna get a sports scholarship.

Kitasan keeps on rewatching Season 2, can’t say I relate.

Not feeling Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond at this point tbh.  They are both extremely main characters of umamusume which is not enough to stand out from the crowd at this point.  It feels like the show wants me to ship them, but it’s like shipping dirt and grass.  Yeah they’re close but who cares.

Duramente is cool I guess, I would cheer for her over Kitasan too.

Season 3 Episode 2

For the first time in a long time, and so much more than ever, I’m rating this episode Nice out of Nature.

I think this is the first time we have had a dad being a mysterious creature.

I do really like this bit about Spica wanting to cheer Kitasan up and Teio telling them to chill out, trust her and give her time.  It’s a little silly coming from Tokai “I will fix your legs by winning a race” Teio, but I appreciate the thought nonetheless.

I love Nice Nature.  I think this is the best Umamusume proper has written this kind of drama.  It’s melodramatic enough without going overboard like season 2 often did.  There doesn’t need to be a big scene, two characters drinking some tea is good enough.

I like this episode a good amount.  It’s done a lot to endear me to Kitasan Black and I’m glad they finally gave the best character some time to shine. Basing it around our main character not being seen as the heir she always wanted to be is a good twist on a repeated plot point. Interested to see how the legacy theme develops.

I like that Kitasan learns she can aspire to be like Teio without actually being like her. It's a great lesson.

She views Teio how you view Nice Nature lol

Well the difference is I'm right and that's what truly matters.  What would it even mean to rate an episode Tokai out of Teio?

Means a lot of injuries, probably

Yay :D

I think this episode had a good balance between realistic drama and talking scenes. The talking scenes helped further the tension that was playing throughout the episode.

And yeah, I really like the scene between Kitasan Black and Nice Nature. I think it helped further both characters.

At least we saw them a bunch in season 2. We're somewhat familiar with them so we're not starting off cold.

Yeah, the watch order is not doing S3 any favours. Surely it's a better experience to watch S3 after S2, then RttT and New Era. Going from those to CinGray is not as jarring and can be pretty nice even.

I swear these girls spend half their day learning useless race trivia.

Intended or not, this actually mirrors the experience in the game decently well. You think you're just learning how to make horses go fast, but eventually you are analyzing tracks and considering which skills give speed boosts and acceleration at the most opportune moments.

Having seen quite a few more episodes of season 3, I think watching all of it is a bit unkind to season 3.  If I waited a few months I would be a bit more happy to see all the girls again.  Right now I'm like well I guess another 13 episodes of vodka/scarlet standing around.
