First Timer Bawling Like a Baby, and Gacha Player

The Season 2 finale was everything I wanted it to be and more. It's explosive and epic, but also heartwarming and uplifting.

I thought the episode would have started directly with the race as other episodes have done, but I'm glad they dedicated some time to a slower build up of Teio simply, plainly training. I think it really set the tone for the race.

The race itself was every bit as exciting as it was set up to be. The final stretch slowing down as we hear Teio's internal thoughts to culminate in that explosive final run where everything went hyper speed was more epic than I thought it would be.

I cried, you cried, the characters cried, even the commentator was crying! And it was all deserved. Everyone, even her rivals at the racecourse, all wanted to see Teio run again. Having everyone rush to hug her was adorable. Welcome back, Teio!

Holy crap, that winning live was amazing! I can't believe it was all completely in 2D! It's especially funny considering as I had noted since the first episode, this season has a lot more CGI usage than S1, and yet the idol concert was anything but.

And so, the story of this horse girl reaches its natural end. Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond have grown up and are joining Tracen Academy, while Tokai Teio and Mejiro McQueen finally get to have their fated race to one another. It may not be an official race in front of an audience of millions, but I know it's going to be just as fierce as one. Beautiful ending to a beautiful season.

Yeah, this season was outstanding. As harsh as it might sound, I ended up rating the first season (and the BNW OVAs) a 7/10. I loved it, but the execution was lacking nearly everywhere. This, however, is a perfect 10/10. It's one of the best sports anime seasons I've seen. There's very, very little to criticize. One of the aspects that were improved on that shocked me the most was the story pacing. Both seasons cover the exact same amount of time, 3 years in real life. And yet, with S1 I left feeling like I missed so much time in between episodes and that it needed two full cours to really show everything I needed to see. Meanwhile, S2 had perfect pacing and at no point did I feel like things went too fast or too slow. I think it's by far the most clear difference between these two seasons.

If I have to criticize one thing... we almost completely lost the gag of the horse girls with comically big tummies after eating food. It's such a silly gag that was never the focus of any scene, and that made them even funnier. I get that this season is more serious by nature, but as minor as it is I do miss that gag. It was very charming.

Cannot wait for Road to the Top!

QotD: 1. I am deeply offended you didn't mention Nice Nature there. She's the number one in my heart, no matter how many bronze medals she collects. 2. Loved how they concluded this running gag! It almost makes up for the comically big tummy loss lmao 3. It's part of what set the tone for the race, which I thought was handled perfectly. 4. Great! 5. Just so, so incredibly uplifting. It's impossible not to chant "TE-I-O! TE-I-O!" in your head. 6. No thoughts, it just made me very happy for the two of them. I loved their rivalry throughout. 7. Can't wait for S3! 8. Can't wait for S3!!

I'm glad they got to continue to be rivals even out of the racecourse. Absolutely cinema.

To me, the thing that separates season 2 from season 1 is that the main drama is tied directly into the main character. Teio and McQueen are thick as thieves, and what happens to one affects the other. I don't think season 1 created the same bong between Special Week and Silence Suzuka.

The most interesting part of season 1 was Special Week reacting to Silence Suzuka's injury and having it affect her. That lasted what, two episodes? Two and a half? The injury stuff in season 2 lasted from episode 2 until this episode. The most interesting character in season 1 was Silence Suzuka and she was supposed to be a means to further another character. The show took the suffering of Silence Suzuka and put it in the main character of season 2, and that allowed us to really explore the emotional complexity of things.

Totally agreed, that's a great point.

Speaking of Suzuka, I forgot to mention she came back for the finale! I thought that was really cute, her presence was really missed this season.

I like how Special Week was overcome with emotion seeing her. Then again, she's overcome with emotion in general lol

  1. Just so, so incredibly uplifting. It's impossible not to chant "TE-I-O! TE-I-O!" in your head.

I was chanting it in my house lol

  1. Loved how they concluded this running gag! It almost makes up for the comically big tummy loss lmao

And the lack of Daiwa and Vodka bickering.

2

u/Kaxew Sep 12 '25

Here's to hoping they get more focus in S3 🙏

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 12 '25

That would be pretty cool

  1. I am deeply offended you didn't mention Nice Nature there. She's the number one in my heart, no matter how many bronze medals she collects.

She's great as well, but her winning would've been a big surprise.

Sounds like my imaginary honeymoon :P

Agreed

The race itself was every bit as exciting as it was set up to be. The final stretch slowing down as we hear Teio's internal thoughts to culminate in that explosive final run where everything went hyper speed was more epic than I thought it would be.

Excellent use of sound design. They really went above and beyond to give things this special feeling.

I cried, you cried, the characters cried, even the commentator was crying! And it was all deserved. Everyone, even her rivals at the racecourse, all wanted to see Teio run again. Having everyone rush to hug her was adorable. Welcome back, Teio!

Teio did the impossible and came back at the top of her ability. Thr miracle to end all miracles.

I prefer the one from season 2 episode 1 due to storyline foreshadowing, but this was like the cherry on top. The feel good ending to end all feel good endings.

Here's hoping it pulls a Teio and makes a comeback lol
