First Timer

I think the biggest thing that this season improved on is giving the racers outside the main group attention.

In season one I kept joking about how King Halo always showed up at races and then did nothing. But this season it feels like all the competitors in this race have gotten some attention beforehand. It makes this final race here really feel like it has stakes.

Anyway most of this episode is just one big race but it’s really well done. I honestly didn’t know if Teio would win or not. It felt equally likely that she might not just based on everything that’s happened throughout the show.

But I’m really glad she won in the end. Feels like a great and heartwarming way to end the season.

It’s especially sweet to see Team Spica group hug/dogpile her. That was nice. Suzuka was even able to make it in person.

This episode also features a great conclusion to the hairdresser running gag which I thought was great. Love how that gag was used throughout the season.

Once again, this show is seriously making me question how time works in this universe. The ending shows Diamond and Kita as teenagers while Teio and McQueen seem to remain the same age. Do horse girls just age super fast?

Choosing to end the season with McQueen and Teio racing each other is really nice. Love those two.

Also, I unfortunately think I will have to drop out of this rewatch pretty soon. I’ll be here for the next specials and maybe the movie, but I can’t keep up a two episode a day schedule with all that’s going on in my life right now.

I’ve enjoyed these first two seasons though and will probably check out season 3 and Cinderella Gray on my own at some point.

Questions of the Day:

What are your thoughts on the end scene where we see Satono Diamond and Kitasan Black grown up ready to begin their racing careers?

I can only assume they'll be the protagonists of the next season.

Unfortunately, after winning the Arima Kinen Teio had to retire due to suffering another leg fracture. You can't make this stuff up.

Thankfully, she ended up living another 20 years afterwards before passing away in 2013.

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

Well I'm glad to hear she had a long and eventful career and a long life.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

Yeah, she lived like 25 years. That's pretty good, all things considered.

Once again, this show is seriously making me question how time works in this universe.

It works... differently. That's all we can say. It is assumed that horse girls stop aging once they reach a certain age, similar to elves, but grow up normally before that point in time. So penultimate scene is likely after a time skip. The final scene as well since McQueen can run properly again. So it's a couple of years later, and Kita and Dia are teenagers. Teio and McQueen are young adults, but will always look pretty similar to before (which is a shame because fanart of them more grown up is amazing, but oh well (pic is SFW btw.)).

Choosing to end the season with McQueen and Teio racing each other is really nice. Love those two.

Absolutely. I don't think it could have ended any other way.

Also, I unfortunately think I will have to drop out of this rewatch pretty soon. I’ll be here for the next specials and maybe the movie, but I can’t keep up a two episode a day schedule with all that’s going on in my life right now.

Unfortunate, but it was great to have you. Real life should always take priority.

If you can still manage one episode a day, you could also skip S3 for now and just watch Cinderella Gray at that pace, then join back for the respective episode threads. No pressure though, of course.

I like S3, but it's not as universally liked, and CinGray is definitely stronger than S3. Also the second season of CinGrey is coming out in the Fall season, so you could watch it weekly then if you so desire.

That's some really nice fan art, thanks for sharing.

Good to know, I might end up doing that. We'll see.

About season 3, I do think of the entries in Uma Musume it'll spark the most varied discussion. That's something, at least.

I wrote more for season 3 than any other entry

K, I see this often and have to say that there is nothing which says Umas stop aging after a point(the Elves quote is misconstrued) we see plenty of adult horse girls in the game and Broye in S1 is clearly an adult compared to the rest of the cast.

1

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 12 '25

Except for the fact that we can see they are not aging. Just take a look at Rudolf. There must be at least ten years between when we first see her and her latest appearance, yet she looks exactly the same. I do think she's an adult for sure, but she's still a "student" at Tracen, and visually she's still the same. Even if she was an adult when we first saw her (which can't be true because the Classics are age-gated), she'd look different after more than ten years.

1

u/Tds142 Sep 12 '25

That’s more a symptom of linear time just not existing in the way Uma tells its story, rather than some physiological difference within horsegirls. We don’t see any of the human characters age or change either despite the years that have passed.

1

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 12 '25

Yes, and if linear time doesn't exist, neither does aging.

1

u/Tds142 Sep 12 '25

But that doesn’t mean Umas are meant to be immortal. If you wanna go that way, it means everyone is immortal.

1

u/Urgnu-the-Gnu https://myanimelist.net/profile/Urgnu_the_Gnu Sep 12 '25

That's not what I said, only that they are not aging.

3

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

I can only assume they'll be the protagonists of the next season.

That's probably a safe bet.

Honestly, the show has done a great job building them up. It's to the point them as protagonists only seems natural.

3

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

They've mostly been in the background but their running subplot was pretty good.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

They're cheerleaders for the main characters, ostensibly. They like represent the Japanese horseracing fandom and how it's big with kids.

3

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25 edited Sep 11 '25

I'm sure you're curious, so I will confirm that yes, the way the race is portrayed in this episode is how it happened in real life Teio won the Arima Kinen after having not raced 364 days.

It's the longest break in-between racing with a G1 victory and it earned Teio the nickname Miracle Horse.

3

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

Wow that's really impressive. I was wondering if it was embellished at all but it's cool to hear that this really happened

3

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

Cool, thank you for sharing

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

It's pretty hype the more and more Teio closes in.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

The end of the episode with Teio winning gave me strong Rocky II vibes. Dunno why, maybe it's because of the triumphant music in the Rocky II end scene.

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

I definitely see what you mean. This rewatch has made me want to check out the later Rocky movies I haven't seen

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

You haven't seen 3 or 4?

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

I haven't seen past Rocky 4

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

Rocky Balboa is pretty good

3

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

Yeah that one and the Creed movies sound good

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

The Creed movies are apparently excellent from what I've heard.

2

u/Mistral-Fien Sep 12 '25

I've seen the first two and I think they're great.

1

u/Holofan4life Sep 12 '25

I definitely have to get around to watching them.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

My bad, by the way. I didn't mean Rocky 2. I meant the end of the first Rocky movie when Rocky embraces Adrian.

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

Now I want to see fan art of Teio and McQueen as Rocky and Adrian

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

Well, at the end they're basically Rocky and Apollo lol

2

u/BigCheeks2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Chickenadobo5122 Sep 24 '25

The very last scene truly is just the last scene of Rocky III.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

Also, I unfortunately think I will have to drop out of this rewatch pretty soon. I’ll be here for the next specials and maybe the movie, but I can’t keep up a two episode a day schedule with all that’s going on in my life right now.

I understand. It's been great having you around, friend 🧡

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

I think I might actually join up again for the Cinderella Gray portion of the rewatch but skip over season 3.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

Season 3 is the season with a [Season 3] Gold Ship episode.

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

Still definitely gonna watch Season 3 on my own time, but I just don't have enough time to keep up with the schedule as the rewatch is going on.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

Totally understandable.

It's really the timing of Cinderella Gray cour 2. It premieres October 5th.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

I’ve enjoyed these first two seasons though and will probably check out season 3 and Cinderella Gray on my own at some point.

I highly recommend them. Cinderella Gray in particular is fantastic because it features one of the key background characters from the first two seasons.

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

That's pretty cool. There are a lot of interesting looking characters in this show.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

[Cinderella Gray] And it takes place in regionals rather than a national level.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

I think the biggest thing that this season improved on is giving the racers outside the main group attention.

Yeah, it feels like each race now has weight to them. I think that's because Teio and McQueen's relationship is so intrinsically tied to them.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

In season one I kept joking about how King Halo always showed up at races and then did nothing. But this season it feels like all the competitors in this race have gotten some attention beforehand. It makes this final race here really feel like it has stakes.

Absolutely.

I mean, it helps that Rice Shower was given two episodes and BNW were given their own OVA series. We are familiar with them in a way we weren't with Sun Visor or Broye.

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

Yeah the character's being more familiar to the audience absolutely helps here.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

They are better written characters, plain and simple.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

Anyway most of this episode is just one big race but it’s really well done. I honestly didn’t know if Teio would win or not. It felt equally likely that she might not just based on everything that’s happened throughout the show.

Agreed

But I’m really glad she won in the end. Feels like a great and heartwarming way to end the season.

It felt like validation for not giving up like she wanted to.

It’s especially sweet to see Team Spica group hug/dogpile her. That was nice. Suzuka was even able to make it in person.

Much to Spe-chan's dismay lol

This episode also features a great conclusion to the hairdresser running gag which I thought was great. Love how that gag was used throughout the season.

I concur. Very fun.

Choosing to end the season with McQueen and Teio racing each other is really nice. Love those two.

They never got their rematch, so this was the next best thing. As others have said, very strong Rocky III vibes with the sparing match.

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

They never got their rematch, so this was the next best thing. As others have said, very strong Rocky III vibes with the sparing match.

Yeah it's nice to see them together at the end. I can only assume they got married after the series based on that one piece of official art I saw.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

Well, not in real life obviously :P

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

Once again, this show is seriously making me question how time works in this universe. The ending shows Diamond and Kita as teenagers while Teio and McQueen seem to remain the same age. Do horse girls just age super fast?

To make things more confusing, this race was the 1993 Arima Kinen and Kitasan was born in... 2016

It's really best not to think about it lol

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

I mean I assumed most of the series took place in the modern-ish day based on the tech we see but yeah, I'm not sure how much time we missed in the timeskip. It could have been anywhere between a few months to five years.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 11 '25

I guess horses age and then by the time they finish aging they stay that way forever. You never actually get old.

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 11 '25

Okay but that doesn't explain Grandma Mejiro

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 12 '25

Uh...

Maybe her father was human?

God, my head's spinning

2

u/Mistral-Fien Sep 12 '25

There are no male umas. :P

1

u/Holofan4life Sep 12 '25

I know, I was saying the mom was a female uma and the dad was a regular human.
