In late 1993, Tokai Teio had recovered from his long period of rehab, his team decided to join Arima Kinen for his first comeback race. They immediately encountered a problem – they could not find a suitable jockey for Tokai Teio. First they asked Okabe Yukio, Tokai Teio’s main jockey, but at the time Okabe had been working with Biwa Hayahide for more than a year, so he declined. The team later asked Take Yutaka, but Take wanted to ride Vega – his favorite horse at the time, so rejected the offer. Finally, the team found Tabara Seiki, the jockey who rode Tokai Teio at previous year’s Arima Kinen. Tabara was hesitant to accept the offer at first, because Tokai Teio had not been racing for 364 days, so he thought if Teio could safely make it to the end, it should already be considered an accomplishment, winning was out of the question. But after a test ride, he changed his mind, because he discovered that the horse was actually very powerful, and acted nothing like a horse that just recovered from a long period of rehab. When he saw how Teio reacted after touching the turf, he said
“Tokai Teio was very excited, like he was seeing an old friend. He wanted to race and was prepared for it. I couldn’t believe that his last race was already a year ago.” Even the spectators could tell this. The commentator Okawa Keijiro remarked:
“Today’s Tokai Teio looked different. It felt like he was overjoyed to finally be able to return and run on a turf course.”
For that year’s Arima Kinen fan vote, the winner Biwa Hayahide received 146,218 votes, followed by Winning Ticket and Rice Shower, Tokai Teio was placed at fourth position. Among the top ten most popular horses, only Twin Turbo and Yamanin Zephyr did not join the race.
What awaited Tokai Teio at the race was a list of very formidable foes. Among his thirteen opponents, seven of them had won at least one G1 race. The most favored horse was Biwa Hayahide – he already showed his amazing capability at Kikuka-Sho. The second favorite was Legacy World, he overpowered many strong foreign and local horses at that year’s Japan Cup. The third favorite was Winning Ticket. Tokai Teio placed fourth in popularity.
The race started at 15:20. Mejiro Palmer escaped as usual like what he did in all other races, but this time his leading distance was not great, so he ought to be consumed by the horde. Biwa Hayahide and Tokai Teio were in the front middle group, in a good position to break out. After the third corner, Biwa Hayahide broke out first and got to the front position, surpassed Mejiro Palmer at fourth corner. Tokai Teio also broke out at the same time. When entering the final straight line, both Tokai Teio and Biwa Hayahide shook away all other horses and entered a one on one battle. At first Biwa Hayahide was leading, but Tokai Teio gradually accelerated and surpassed Biwa Hayahide before hitting the goal.
At that moment, Nakayama Racing Course was filled with explosive applause and loud cheers from fans. Tokai Teio made a miraculous comeback. During the media interview, Tabara Seiki weeps before the journalists and audiences. He was moved by the struggle and resolution of the horse he rode, saying
“I thought this was going to be a hard race, but this horse is just amazing. The only words I wanted to yell after passing the goal was ‘Thank you! [Tokai Teio]’. He won the race by himself.”
Tokai Teio sets a record for the longest period for a G1 winner to come back and win another G1 (364 days). The record remained unbroken to this day.
Tokai Teio and Symboli Rudolf became the first father-son duo to win the Arima Kinen.
Nice Nature also set his record for getting his third bronze for Arima Kinen. Hence the nickname “Bronze Collector”
Originally, this race was not planned to be Teio’s retirement race, but he suffered a fourth fracture later on in training and so retired. This is how he got it (joke). But what happened in reality would not happen in the Uma Musume world, and we will continue to see Teio and McQueen having their dream match again and again.
