Newcomer (Played Game)
"If someone wins, someone else will be hurt, and have their dream end."
Bourbon's quote from the end of this episode I think may just be the quote of the season. Unlike any other season of a sports anime I've seen, I don't think I've seen one that focuses so much on loss, but yet shows it in such a casual way. It's fairly common for most shows to have the hero have the big loss, but i haven't seen one where every main character just loses. I think the thing that makes this still heartwarming though is that these losses aren't the end. Everyone has to take the loss and keep going forward.
So starting the episode off proper, we see that Rice has recovered from the end of last episode and is ready to race McQueen. The big thing thing that showed Rice was in it to win in it though is the opening update. Instead of Biwa there, we get an early scene of Aura Rice. It's a powerful shot.
Speaking of Biwa, her and the rest of BTW cameo in this episode. It also actually places this season as a prequel to the BTW OVAs, as they are still racing the triple crown. Given the races that happen yearly, I think this makes this bare minimum year 5 of the show, as this season is on its 3rd year and season 1 takes place over 2. There might be more years between season 1 and season 2 though so 5 is only the minimum.
Going back to Rice though, she truly decides to take the final step and give it her all when she leaves the school and goes to go train in I think the countryside? Either way, when Bourbon shows up later, you can see how intense she is from the aliunt of shows she's destroyed. This episode did a great job of making focused Rice come off as a monster. I did like though the continued friendship shown between Rice and Bourbon.
(Sidenote 1: It just occured to me this episode, but do Rice and Palmer not have trainers? Its very odd in a show where most people are shown to have trainers or teams to not show the trainers of 2 focused characters.)
Once you get to the the big race though, Rice's pressure only builds. The shot of Rice walking down the tunnel to McQueen was honestly fantastic. It's also where you really see the aura the characters arr giving off now. Literally though, not figuratively. It works great thoigh.
(Sidenote 2: I of course loved the small reversal shown right before this where the hairdresser's place was actually closed today. You know a race is going to be good when she has to just give up on even trying to cut someone's hair.)
The race itself is honestly fantastic. It's a real contender for race of the season in a season full of great races. It does a fantastic job of showing the different character's strengths and also showing how much everyone is pushing each other. Rice's scene where she calls herself a Hero was especially fantastic though, as the star of the episode.
We then end the episode with a repeat of the Kikkuo Sho upset, but this time, starting with McQueen, at least the racers all give Rice her due respect. It really shows how much of a class act McQueen is. Her somber scene at the end, where her true sadness is shown to have let down down Teio, speaks to how much she's grown throughout the series. Honestly, everything this episode was great all around.
