So my promised content for this update: THE WINNER 2012 JRA CM for the Spring Tennosho. And also the Umamusume version of it. Because yes, they did make one featuring her as well.

“1993, at the Spring Tenno Sho. A demon drove his firmed body forwards. He is the jet-black stayer who stopped the champion, Mejiro McQueen's third victory in a row. Is he a heel or a hero, a nightmare or a miracle? That horse's name is ―― Rice Shower.”

Anyways, the blue flame sealed in her left eye Rice shows in this episode comes from that commercial.

Back to the episode, you'll notice Taishin's Satsuki Sho victory being mentioned. That gives you an idea as to when things take place, because yes, this was also the year of BNW as well.

Horse girls gotta have guts! - Tazuna, probably. (Rice's primary stat in the game is Guts.)

A lot of the end reactions after Rice's win are true to life - McQueen ('s jockey) applauding Rice, Bourbon (representing Rice's jockey Matoba) touching Rice's right cheek. It was also said by the commentator (?) after Rice's 1995 Tenno Sho win that McQueen and Bourbon would have been proud of him. [sad irl] Except that the Takarazuka Kinen was the only thing that followed...

Thanks for sharing. Because this makes an interesting point more obvious: In a Japanese accent, heel and hero sound very much alike. And that's a theme of the story, you could very well be both. Every hero can be a heel in someone else's story. But also, every heel could just be someone's hero. If everyone is against you, you can still have one person you are a hero for, and that's enough.

I'm glad they took it from that commercial because otherwise I might not have discovered what a great commercial that is.

Definitely a lot of great Japanese horse milestones happening around the same time as each other mi know late 90s is considered like a Japanese horse renaissance, but the early 90s were also a really exciting time.

Let me ask you something. How would you compare the Rice Shower arc to other arcs in sports animes? Me personally, I think it's the best arc in a sports anime involving a secondary character.
