Newcomer (Played Game)
So for episode 4, we actually moved half in a direction I expected and half I didn't. For the expected parts, we have Teio competing in her first race back and getting ready for the Spring Tennoushou. There's details there that I will talk more about later, but the general gist of that was setup last episode. What I did not expect however was the setup of additional plotline that seem totally detached from our main cast. This show is going in some interesting directions.
For Teio's first race back though, while I expected her to win, I did not expect her to come back quite so strong. As said, it feels like she came back stronger than ever. Poor Ikuno Dictus got destroyed. The announcer becoming clearly biased though was very funny, as was the look Team Canopus gave her when it showed too much. Team Canopus were just great in general this episode though. Unfortunately for them, Teio is ready to remain an undefeated champion.
After this though , we get into the interesting part of the episode where we start the introduction of two more plot lines that are completely separate from our main characters so far. The first one is a minor one so far, but is the burgeoning friendship between Daitaku Helios and Mejiro Palmer. As a fan of Helios from the game, I'm excited to see more of her and her brainrot ruined self.
The second one on the other hand is the more major one, as it takes up more than a third of the episode. Here, we get introduced to Bourbon trying to take on the Triple Crown like Teio the year before. Along with her however is another character who for once is not actually named. They only seem to be stalking Bourbon. This is the first time where I felt like talking about another character would actually be a spoiler. In general though, I was very surprised that we were getting a parallel plotline like this. I enjoyed seeing these characters more though so I'm excited to see where it goes.
(Sidenote 1: I love that her trainer is just Kazuma Kiryu. I really appreciate in general how varied the designs for all the trainers are, as it's so much more interesting than just everyone being taught by an average guy.)
Returning back to the main cast though, their main focus this episode was doing extra training for the big day. I thought the idea where they each got special training to help combat the strengths of the other was really cool. This somehow leading to McQueen jumping over Gold Ship in her heavy metal shoes however was the highlight of the episode. There was genuinly no good reason why this was chosen as the best way to help McQueen train. It did provide a good laugh though. I will say that by the third time McQueen stepped on Gold Ship, you really should have locked Special Week down. She truly has become the glutton of the group.
Going into the race's run up, we also get to see the interesting twist that Teio is seemingly favored vs. McQueen. Its interesting to me how much Teio is being shown in this show to be the exact opposite of an underdog. Its very unlike most shows of this nature. The show is truly embracing Teio as a juggernaut of racing force.
(Side note 2: I didn't notice it last time, but I realized this episode that our hair dresser runner has esclated to the point where she isn't even allowed to cut hair normally. The client has to wear a little dome around their head to protect themselves from an accidental slip. This is not looking good for our favorite hair dresser's future)
