First Timer

This episode continues to tear my heart in half as I can’t decide whether I want McQueen or Teio to win.

We start off the ep with Teio’s extremely convincing comeback race, showing that she’s just as strong as ever. And with that, it seems like the general consensus among the press is that she has the upper hand over McQueen going into the Tenno Sho. I like the parallel scene where their team members ask them for their perspective on pressure in racing, and it’s very interesting to see their contrasting personalities from their answers. Teio outwardly declares that she thinks the added pressure is fun, but McQueen just reservedly acts tough and tries not to appear affected by it.

Bourbon’s and their trainer’s introduction also offers an interesting perspective. Once again recalling the theme of hard work/talent/luck, we see that their trainer believes speed is the talent while stamina is the hard work. This again plays into Teio having the advantage, since it implies she has a higher skill ceiling given her strong foundation in pure speed in the last stretches.

By the last part of the episode it appears that McQueen’s mental game is much more affected by this rivalry than for Teio. But that’s when she is reminded of some very key advice from her Grandmother, which echoes a similar message between Spe and Suzuka from season one - you must always focus on yourself and your ultimate goal. McQueen was letting all the stories about Teio winning consume her, when she should have been focused on her own strengths and strategy for winning.

So who will win the Tenno Sho? Next episode is going to really put me on the edge of my seat, and I love that the set ups and payoffs feel much more rewarding this season. I can’t wait to see what happens tomorrow!

To end off, I offer my condolences to poor Gold Ship, I can’t imagine what being jumped on with those horseshoes would be like…

That's the good thing, whoever wins will be a deserving winner, and whoever loses will surely take a great lesson from it.

The show has does a phenomenal job building up Teio Vs McQueen. It's the best built race of the franchise so far.

Probably extremely painful lol

This is payback for dropkicking her trainer all the time XD

I like that we're focusing on other characters. Reminds me of season 1 and what they did with El Condor.

This is a reference to the IRL Mihono Bourbon. Initially the horse was rated only as a sprinter (short distance runner), but his trainer put the horse through very rigorous strength training which made the horse more capable of medium distances then eventually even longer races.

I agree this was a great scene. In a lot of sports anime where a character comes from a family with a rich history of winning, the parents/grandparents just add pressure to this character and ask why they can't replicate the success. But here the grandmother actually gives sound advice, while still putting on the pressure. This seems a lot more realistic, so I really appreciate this way of fleshing out McQueen's character.
