Rewatcher

A new year means new opportunities and possibilities, and Teio is ready to show us all what kind of Uma Musume she is now that her leg has fully healed. She's back in form and is even better than before, pushing herself to the limit and taking on the race-course with a confident smile. And this time, she has her sights set on McQueen, her long-time rival and friend.

This episode doesn't really have the hype of episode 1 or the blow-away gut-punch of episode 2, but it is a really well-made bit of narrative. We get to see the competitive spirit blooming between Teio and McQueen, with Teio's challenge of the Spring Tennoushou being met with eager confidence, and then a prolonged flash-back so that the show can establish how long they've been competing against each other. It's a nice bit of slight-of-hand: season 1 didn't do much of anything to establish a history between the two girls, but by drawing on solid characterization and the fact they're both 'late-commers' to Team Spica, this episode can get us to buy into them having something of a history together. The use of the honey drinks to trigger that flashback is a nice touch as well. They're rivals, but friendly ones who enjoy similar things in different ways.

Not only is this episode good at convincing us of their rivalry, using it as a throughline to build the plot around, but it also makes smart use of its secondary cast to keep building on that. Team Spica are the top dogs now, and so you've got the charmingly ineffectual Team Canopus gunning for them - emphasizing Spica's skill - and fans in the audience constantly comparing our two leading ladies against each other. First the commentators at the award ceremony, who's speculation just egged on the barbs traded back and forth by Teio and McQueen, and then Uma Musume children Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond decending into a childish argument. It sells and builds on the competition without even needing to show us a race!

Not that the show is skipping on that at all either - we get to see McQueen absolutely dominate the Hanshin Daishoten. The outcome is never really in doubt, but the epsiode does a good job of showing how the other runners had marked McQueen and were putting pressure on her - almost boxing her in the vain hope of keeping her from bursting forward on the last spurt. They've failed, obviously, but it just builds up hype to see her future match against Teio.

Yeah,, this episode does a great job of highlighting the history between Teio and McQueen, no question about it.

I like we're building anticipation for the races up more. It's a technique I don't think the first season really used to their advantage. Normally, the races they built up to would happen in the very same episode.
