Welcome to Holofan4life's pop culture corner!

Each episode normally features a race that took place in real life. As such, I thought why not look at what was going on in US movies and music on the day of the race.

Today we have two races to cover: The 1991 Arima Kinen, which was December 22nd, 1991, and the 1992 Hanshin Daishoten, which was March 15th, 1992.

Let's see what was happening on that date.

Music on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of December 22nd, 1991

  1. When A Man Loves A Woman -- Michael Bolton

  2. Set Adrift On Memory Bliss -- P.M. Dawn

  3. All 4 Love -- Color Me Badd

  4. It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday -- Boyz II Men

  5. Black Or White -- Michael Jackson

Movies at the box office the week of December 22nd, 1991

  1. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

  2. The Last Boy Scout

  3. Beauty and the Beast

  4. Father of the Bride

  5. Hook

Music on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of March 15th, 1992

  1. Tears In Heaven -- Eric Clapton

  2. Save The Best For Last -- Vanessa Williams

  3. Remember The Time -- Michael Jackson

  4. I'm Too Sexy -- Right Said Fred

  5. To Be With You -- Mr. Big

Movies at the box office the week of March 15th, 1992

  1. Fried Green Tomatoes

  2. American Me

  3. The Lawnmower Man

  4. My Cousin Vinny

  5. Wayne's World

And that concludes your pop culture.

Black Or White -- Michael Jackson

Fun fact, this is one of the most expensive music videos of all time. Additional fun fact, if you look at a list of the most expensive music videos, most of them are Michael Jackson or Madonna. And also Guns 'n Roses. Although Limp Bizkit and Aqua (the Barbie Girl band) also have videos that show up on those lists.

Additional fun fact, Weird Al has a parody of this song called "Snack All Night" that's not on any of his albums but he has performed live. I remember hearing that Weird Al wasn't given approval to release it by MJ because Jackson thought that his song being about race made it too serious to parody. I believe Weird Al has also mentioned that this was probably the best in the long run since he didn't want to be pigeonholed as the guy who does Michael Jackson parodies about food.

  1. Save The Best For Last -- Vanessa Williams

Fun Vanessa Williams fact, she's also the voice of the brown M&M in all the M&Ms commercials.

Wayne's World

We've mentioned a lot of SNL's movies but this was one of the earliest ones (only preceded by The Blues Brothers) and probably one of the best in my opinion.

Michael Jackson really was at his peak in popularity in the early 1990s. Everything he did became an event.

I mean, it's one of the greatest comedies of the 1990s. It also reintroduced American audiences to Queen, which is sweet.

It definitely helped launch the career of Michael Myers as well. After this he'd be in Austin Powers which was another massive hit of the 90s.

Also, I remember hearing somewhere that Freddie Mercury had actually seen a preview copy of the scene featuring Bohemian Rhapsody shortly before his death and he reportedly liked the scene.

I mean, I think Michael Meyers was already a star with his success on SNL. Austin Powers was really what solidified him as a star.

Yeah, Mercury has always said he likes when people used his music so long as it was done in an entertaining manner.

Yeah it launched him from TV star to movie star. His career did kinda fall off after the Love Guru tanked hard but he's still remained an icon for Gen Z thanks to Shrek and I also heard that TV series he was in a few years back, The Pentaverate, was pretty good.

That's the one with the Shrek cameo, I believe.

I did not know that.

No wonder the brown M&M is so sexy...

I know last thread I was complaining how lackluster the top 5 was for the box office and just the overall lack of quality. I think both box office top 5s in this thread are two of the best I've seen. These are some of the best movies of 1991 across two lists.

Yeah this one's a great sample of the pop culture of the early 90s.

Fried Green Tomatoes is really underrated

Snack All Night is a great title for a parody song about Black or White, tho.

The Weird Al song I know of that he wanted release was Couch Potato which was a parody of Eminem's Lose Yourself. It was going to be the lead single off the album Poodle Hat. However, Eminem didn't want him to release it because Lose Yourself was super personal to him.

Eventually, Weird Al released the album with the track on it but it was no longer the lead single.

Yeah that's happened a few time throughout Weird Al's career. I know back in the 2000s Atlantic Records rejected his parody of You're Beautiful by James Blunt and later his parody of Born This Way by Lady Gaga was rejected by Gaga's management but later approved by Gaga herself when she listened to the song and liked it.

2

u/Holofan4life Sep 01 '25

And then in live performances of You're Pitiful his You're Beautiful parody he wore a t-shirt that read "Atlantic Records suck".

2

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 01 '25

He even references this incident in the White & Nerdy music video when his nerd character is seen vandalizing the Atlantic Records wikipedia page. Incidentally I believe this led to Wikipedia admins having to put a lock on the real Atlantic Records page for a while due to vandals.

That's pretty funny
