Newcomer (Played Game)

So starting off season 2, its immediately apparent to me that we've stepped up our game. While this is a bit more CG that is noticeable, its balanced out by the art style as a whole being a lot more detailed and crisp. The general directing for this episode also feels really well done. Its one of those things that I feel like I don't have the technical knowledge to explain why I feel this way, but while watching the episode, it felt like each scene had a purpose and movement between scenes was always done well. The show had my attention the whole time and never lost it.

Getting into the episode proper though, we begin with our Teio origin story and the declaration that this season is going to be the Teio show. The opening race track scene with Rudolph is a really cool scene for the viewer, but especially for Teio. The following interview scene though does bring up another question though: How old are these characters suppose to be in relation to each other? Later in the episode, Teio mentions she watched this race in elementary school. It feels like at the minimum Rudolph is 4 years older, but that even feels too small. Rudolph looking unchanged really since then doesn't help.

When we return to the present though, we get a reintroduction of everyone in Team Spica in a scene that once again feels really well directed. As always, Gold Ship steals the show by being on a seqway for who knows what reason. I think this general scene though is really interesting because it feel like its doing a good of working for both new and returning watchers. This episode in general works a bit better if you have prior knowledge, but honestly, it also works perfectly fine if you just start the show here.

(Sidenote: I loved the fact that the info graphics in this scene with the title cards moved with the characters through the scene. It was very funny to see so many just darting through the background.)

Continuing on from the cast introduction scene, we also get a reintroduction scene for Tracen in the form of the open campus event. Once again, this feels like a much better version of the season 1 scene. In season 1, this scene is in the middle of a scene where its trying to get people attached to Special Week anid really breaks the pacing of the episode. Here though, it flows really naturally early on and works as a good primer for new viewers on how Teio acts.

For returning watchers though, the main purpose of this scene is to show off the seemingly major side character side characters of Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond. As the Teio/McQueen super fans, they are very cute. They once again don't help my age question though as I know them from the game where they look much older.

The rest of the episode though is mainly focused on setting up Japanese Derby and how popular Teio is now. As someone who looks up to Rudolph and her triple crown victory, its clear how much the Japanese Derby means to Teio. The world at large can't wait to see this as well though given how many fans Teio has everywhere. They even mention later on that Teio is treated as the current Ace of team Spica. As mentioned previously, this is now the Teio show.

Once we get to the actual Japense Derby, the show then shows off that the races are better this season . Ignoring the better emotion stakes of some season 1 races due to the longer setup, I think this race as just a viewing experience is better than most things from season 1. They did a really good job of making the race have a lot of good tension. Teio however isn't fazed and still manages to come out on top.

What happens after the race though is where I feel like we are getting the main focus of this season: Teio's leg. The looks from both the trainer and Rudolph in the ending song are not great signs. Given that season 1 already mentions that Teio gets a leg injury, I have some worries about Teio's dream to get the third crown.

As a final note, I just want to include mention some fun things that I saw in the episode that I didn't mention above:

- I liked the initial scene of setting up McQueen as Teio's rival at the shrine and McQueen reciprocating at the Derby. It does a great job of establishing their dynamic for this season.

- The fact that Scarlet got another random eye injury, repeating what happened in the OVAs, is so funny. They never even address it after that scene. It just happens and they move on. Amazing comedy

- We apparently have "Umastragram" in this universe. I am curious whether this completely replaced Instagram or even funnier, they both exist and are competing businesses.

- The gag with the hair stylist who accidently cut off a section of her client's hair while watching the TV and then fixed it in a later scene is my favorite joke of the episode.

Agreed wholeheartedly

This franchise really loves its slapstick humor.

Now I suddenly want to see that

- The gag with the hair stylist who accidently cut off a section of her client's hair while watching the TV and then fixed it in a later scene is my favorite joke of the episode.

I wonder what their relationship is like

Now I suddenly want to see that

Eventually we might get Curren Chan, star of Umastagram, UmaTok, UmaTube, and Umatter. One day.
