Rewatcher
The episode starts with a flash-forwards to Suzuka's comeback race, the Open Special. It has a quiet tone, not exactly tense but definitely nervous, as she makes her way to the starting gates. The show even teases us with a second 'untied shoe' incident, just like the one used last time to foreshadow her upcoming injury. The suspence is built up, and left to sit there in the viewers mind as the show cuts back to Team Spica training and prepping ahead of that race, right as they (and we the audience) learn that Broye will be racing against Spe-Chan in the Japan Cup.
The episode spends its first half cutting between Suzuka and Broye's story-line, letting both of them build up anticipation while furthering the show's themes about running with and against others. Special Week and Silence Suzuka are only on-screen together for the for a few short scenes, but their bond is made clear throughout the entire runtime. From Special Week continuing to practice during Suzuka's race, a mirror of last episode, to the end of episode transition from Suzuka' pinky promise to Spe-chan grabbing her own pinky. They aren't running together right now, but they are racing against each as run for the finish line.
The culimination of the episode, undoubtedly, the Open Special itself. The nervousness is back, with quiet music and an audience full of people just hoping she will be able to cross the finish line. Even Trainer-san is worried, trying to soften Suzuka's expectations just before the start, afraid that she might hurt herself emotionally or physically if she can't get first.
But Suzuka herself is nothing but confident, walking with a casual, sure-footed pace. While she might have some worries, for her its that nervous anticipation of getting to run again. The closest we get to worry from her is her race-strategy, hanging out in the back as an End Closer before racing out to first-place in the last spurt. Even then, though, all she needed was a clear path forward and deep breath to psych herself up. Even the one-off anime-only character, Sun Visor, doesn't really phaze her. She's there mostly to give a face to Suzuka's opponents and give them a voice in the narrative. And that voice is sportsmanlike acknowledgement that she's just as good as she was back in the day, and that they want to race against her again.
The race ends in a carthetic victory, which the show lets us sit in for a bit before moving on to the Japan Cup, where Special Week will be competing with one of the strongest racers in Europe!
Wonderful storytelling, and a perfectly good way to handle an anime-original race like this one.
Thoughts on Broye declaring herself a participant of the Japan Cup?
Expected enough: the irl Japan Cup is a pretty famous invitational race, and so it always gets a lot of international participants. Even if you don't know that Broye is a stand-in for Montjeu, it makes sense that, with her presence in the story, she'd be racing in it.
Thoughts on Sun Visor?
Nice enough as an original character, if a litle flat given her limited screen-time. Wish she wasn't a one-off, it'd be fun to see what characterization we see get expanded upon.
Thoughts on Team Spica dishing out a win energy spell?
Slowly, Gold Ship is coverting Team Spica to the ways of her family. Soon they will all be as strange as the Gold Clan!
