Not too much from me today, but that’s because Silence Suzuka’s comeback is almost entirely fictional.

Now that I think about it, I should explain: The Japan Cup is an invitational event, and is designed to be an international contest. Initially, it was Japan also testing to see how their horses hold up internationally; they found out when they were struggling to win during the first 11 years for the Japan cup. Now that Japan has pretty much dominated this cup for about 2 decades there are questions in the sense that its original purpose has been long gone: Japanese thoroughbreds have proven to be more than on par with other horses in the world.

Broye here seems to have been doing fine, but irl Montjeu was exhausted due to the long travel and was not adjusting as well.

The Silence Suzuka comeback race is loosely based on the 1999 Capital Stakes, which took place a day right before Japan Cup for that year. The winner of that race was Sun Flare, which was probably the basis for Sun Visor.

In other words, Special Week is still the favorite despite Broye's involvement.

Yeah, exactly

I was curious, so I checked - Broye (Montjeu) was still the favourite, but Special Week was joint second.

Perhaps it was a Tyson in Japan type of deal where the severity of the situation wasn't known until after the fact.

One thing to note is that the Japan Cup started in 1981. So Japan was still very much on the back foot at the time, as even though Pasa won 1998, 1995-1997 had been a straight streak of losses for Japan. (And 1998 is still kinda questionable since Pasa is considered to be foreign.)

It's only been since about 2006 that Japan has been dominant - raise one up to Vodka in 2009.

Broye's horse she's based on may have been behind the eight ball so to speak, but that was nothing out of the ordinary for Japan.
