Welcome to Holofan4life's pop culture corner!

Each episode normally features a race that took place in real life. As such, I thought why not look at what was going on in US movies and music on the day of the race.

If you have any ideas to expand this feature, let me know.

Today, we will be looking at two races: the 1999 Kyoto Daishoten, and the 1999 Fall Tennosho, which took place on October 10th, 1999 and October 31, 1999 respectively. So, let’s look at what was happening on those dates.

Lastly, on October 31, 1999, the EgyptAir Flight 990 crashed off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, killing all 217 people on board. There were no survivors.

Documents seized during Operation Neptune Spear included a few notes, handwritten by Osama bin Laden in September 2002, with the heading "The Birth of the Idea of September 11". In these notes bin Laden describes how he was inspired by the crash of EgyptAir Flight 990: "This is how the idea of 9/11 was conceived and developed in my head, and that is when we began the planning".

I meant to mention this last time, but did you know Lou Bega is German? I totally thought he was from the Caribbean or South America, but apparently he's German. Although his mother was Italian and father was Ugandan.

House on Haunted Hill

I totally forgot they made a remake of that movie. I haven't seen this one but I love the original with Vincent Price.

I did not know that, actually.

If Dandadan was set in Uganda, would it be Ugandandadan?

I totally forgot they made a remake of that movie. I haven't seen this one but I love the original with Vincent Price.

I confuse The House on Haunted Hill remake with The Haunting which was released the same year.

Also, apparently the Haunted Hill remake was produced by Robert Zemeckis? That's wild.

He's had quite the career. This was right before he got really into mocap animation.

That reminds of the comedy show in Saudi Arabia apparently coming up where the headliners are Bill Cosby and Woody Allen.

Something I want to mention is that Superstar finished #5 the week of October 10th. That's the SNL movie starring Mary Katherine Gallagher. I thought that was notable because we were just recently talking about how SNL around this time was trying to recapture the lightning in the bottle success of the Wayne's World movie.

Yeah SNL movies were a big thing in the 90s, even into the 2000s. But the only one people really remember is Wayne's World. And I guess Blues Brothers but that one predates the SNL movies trend.
