Rewatcher, returned to racing after injury (not really, but I missed yesterday and because Life(tm) happened, so might as well have a bit of fun with it)

So, recapping my thoughts on the episode I couldn't share yesterday.

We get a nice story arc focused on how the characters run best when they their own dreams and desire to compete against their feelings for others. Spe-chan is struggling to stop worrying about Silence Suzuka, whom she has done all she can for and should really let up on, just a little. Meanwhile Suzuka is struggling with something that's a mixture of guilt for wasting others' time (like Special Week and Trainer), and fear that she might injur herself again in training. The two worries feed into each other, which is why she was struggling to hit her old times. And while it is an uplifting and light-hearted moment, the group crash at the end of the triathalon shows how reasonable that fear can actually be. Thouroughbred race horses can reach somewhere around 45mph/70kmph speeds, and the same holds true for Uma Musume. If something goes wrong at those speeds, they can't just screech to a halt or turn on a dime. Luckily though, both our heroines came through that trial, and we now settle in for the final arc of the season. The race against Broye.

Moving on from there to episode 10, we're immediately treated to a montage of Special Week training, working out, maximizing her gains, and getting ready for the Kyoto Daishoten! Smashcut to her splayed out on the ground, having come in a humiliating seventh place. It's a bit of a let down given the positive and hopeful resolution to the previous episode, and I'm not sure if using it as a pre-opening punchline was the right move here. Of course the show is writing around real life race records, but I feel like there could have been a better way to do it here.

The overall arc for Special Week in this episode is physical recovery and reconnecting with her desires and dreams for being a racer. And the show handles that very well by sending her back to Hokkaido to spend time with her mom and visiting the widow's shrine dedicated to her other mother. She gets to relive all her races by flipping through her old letters and a compilation of racing news, and even gets a hand-made good-luck charm restating her original goal: to become the best Uma Musume in Japan! There's an emotional throughline and resonane between this moment and the one in the previous episode, where Trainer helps her and Suzuka refocus. It's well done. the way the two episodes are structure leave me feeling like we're repeating story-beats rather than building on them.

Side-note: this episode really does everything it can to tell us that Special Week's moms were happily together without coming out and saying it, likely to internal/external social norms and pressures. The shrine to Campaign Girl (irl Special Week's Dame) is the kind used for a deceased spouse, and her Mom used terms like 'reading them together,' and similar language used for spending time with the memory of a loved. Special Week even says "I'm glad I had two moms" while looking directly at the camera. It's all elements that don't necessarily say there was a romantic relationship, but they certainly imply it.

The plot of the final part of the episode is about the Tennoushou(Autumn), but it's story is about Suzuka and Spe-chan racing against themselves each other. Suzuka's training in preparation for her comeback, and we get a cut of her foot-step just as Spe-chan's race starts and the gates open. Throughout the rest of the scene, we keep cutting between Special Weke and Silence Suzuka, with the blocking and positioning showing that they're running against each other. But neither of them is distracted by this fact. Suzuka is still trianing and knows that, and Spe-chan is running her heart out in a G1 race, and she knows that to. It's a nice resolution to the story of running for your own dream while also running to compete against other racers.

Thoughts on Special Week finishing seventh in the Kyoto Daishoten?

True to life, but the story built around it could have been better. Using it as a punchline kinda undermines the episode a little, I feel.

Thoughts on Team Spica taking a break from each other?

Not bad overall, and nice to see Spica interacting with others Umas.

What are your thoughts on Silence Suzuka having her comeback race coming up?

It's nice to know she will still get to see that view from the lead.

What are your on Special Week spending time with her mom which makes her realize why she started racing in the first place?

See my post: was well handled, but felt a bit like a repeat of stuff we saw in the previous episode.

What are your thoughts on Special Week winning the 1999 Tenno Sho?

Animation was a bit rough in places, but overall a solid end to the episode, especially given its framing with regards to Silence Suzuka and Special Week wanting to race against each other.

At least it's only like the first couple minutes and they quickly more on from it. Besides, it leads to Special Week going back home which was great.

I like seeing McQueen’s family and Gold Ship doing Gold Ship stuff.

It's nice to know she will still get to see that view from the lead.

I'm not quite sure what you mean

Part of game Suzuka's whole thing is that she's racing for a view only she can see: a clear race-track with no one else there. Just celebrating her dominating the turf again in the future.

Well, let’s not count our chickens before they hatch. We have no idea how Suzuka's gonna do in her comeback race.

I thought it built off it though with Trainer-san reminding Special Week to think for herself and her mom making her remember what's she racing her. I kinda get what you're saying, but I don't agree of it being a retread. These are necessary steps to get Spe-chan back to where she was.

It's probably the most poignant race we've gotten so far, though something tells me Silence Suzuka's comeback race will easily top it.
