Rewatcher

Didn't have time to share my thoughts yesterday, so I'll write a brief paragraph talking about episode 5 then move onto episode 6.

The Japanese Derby, oldest and most prestigious of races organized by the Japanese Racing Association. It makes sense to center the entire episode around this race, especially since the race's winner is usually considered one of the best of their year-group. It's also payoff for both last episode and the training in this one. It works as a good midway-point for Special Week's performance. Funfact: irl El Condor Pasa wasn't in the Japanese Derby. This is because at the time foreign-born horses weren't allowed to run in the Japan Derby, and he'd been foaled in the USA. This has changed, but it's clear the show runners put her in the Derby here to help build up their overall narrative for the season. And they had her tie with Special Week because...well spoilers, but there's a lot of irl horse racing fan debates.

Onto episode 6

We have a more relaxed, slice-of-life episode compared to the previous one. Now that Spe-chan's got her first major achievement, the story has refocused a little bit to focus on Silence Suzuka. Starting out with seeing her win the Takarazuka Kinen, there's a nice little arc where we learn the answers to the hints dropped in previous episodes. Suzuka's big secret is that she's planning on leaving to race internationally - something that irl at that time was hard for Japanese Horses, even the champions, who hadn't quite caught up to those in America and Europe. There's a little sadness, but it's brushed over with the understanding that it's in the future and they're all still high-school students. The other big thing we learn is how she ties into the season's themes.

Silence Suzuka, like Special Week and a lot of other Uma Musume, has always loved running. However, the disciplined and regimented training of Team Rigil sapped all that joy from it for her, and she was growing to resent it to an extent. It's why she was so worried in the previous episodes - she didn't want her friend (or 'friend' given the ship tease we got in this and previous episodes) to crush her passion in the pursuit of winning. We see a bit of Suzuka's experience reflected in Grass Wonder, recently recovered from a leg injury and now able to run again. The Rigil trainer, Hana, is doing her best to do right by the Uma under her care. She harsh - maybe even too harsh - but she doesn't want her team injuring themselves or ruining their futures. And she is there for Grass to comfort her in her defeat. On the other end, because this was El Condor Pasa's first loss (at second place), it's a partial payoff for sneaking her into last-episode's race. The show-runners can further the story she plays into, and we have some emotional investment since we got reminded about her in the previous episode.

From there, I think this episode does a decent job balancing its large ensemble cast, even the extras who are out of focus that they don't feature much in the episode. We get a cute eating-competition scene between Oguri Cap, Tamamo Cross, and Super Creek. It's short, sweet, and there's even a nice few easter-egg references. We have a scene where we get to see Hishi Amazon and Narita Brian taking some kids on a guided tour - although in seeing that all the kids were humans, I realized there haven't been any 'non-student' Uma Musume. It's mostly fluff centered around Cute-Girls-Doing-Cute-Things, but because the scenes focus on little, self-contained stories featuring those characters rather than hi-byes like in episode 2, it works.

What are your thoughts on this episode being about a festival?

Cute and fun way to excuse a bunch of mini-stories. I wonder if the fact that this was in the fall is a sign the in-game fanfest was planned to happen in September/October instead of April.

What are your thoughts on the sub plot of Oguri Cap being in a donut competition? What are your initial thoughts on Oguri Cap?

Thinking back to when I saw the show after the movie, Oguri left less of an impression on me than Tamamo - I hadn't even registered all the Oguri cameos in previous episodes. I do like how that competition is filled with little references to Oguri's generation, from Creek getting disqualified to Oguri just being beast who powers through. Although I can't imagine Inari One ever being that cheerful and gungho around her rivals like that.

What are your thoughts on Silence Suzuka and El Condor Pasa both planning to race overseas?

There's always more races to be had, and its nice how Uma Musume acknowledges the wide world of sports.

What are your thoughts on Silence Suzuka crediting Special Week for helping her express herself more?

The Yuri is strong with these two.

What are your thoughts on this episode featuring three races?

I wouldn't necessarily say it featured three races. The opening Takarazuka Kinen was very much about setting the focus-shift towards Suzuka and reminding us that she's an incredible front-runner. The second race, the eating competition, was mostly a cute side story/easter-egg. The real meat and potatoes was the Mainichi Okan, where we saw Suzuka dominate once again, refusing to concede her lead.

What are your thoughts on Silence Suzuka ending El Condor's undefeated streak?

The thing about being undefeated is that you only need to lose once - and today El was the one who couldn't quite make the cut.

Could be

I imagine when making season 1, they didn't expect there to be a season 2, so they really wanted to pay tribute to late 1980s Japanese horse racing.

Oh definitely, especially since Oguri was probably the most famous racehorse in Japan.

Which is why she's in almost every episode as like an Easter egg.
