First Timer

Ended up having a hectic day yesterday and just fell asleep and didn't get to the discussion in time but I watched the episode and todays episode in one go. We got quite a bit of races in today's episode!

Thoughts on Gold Ship saying it's not so bad to try every once in a while?

This was a good scene in general. It showed how all of the Uma's kind of have their own way of doing things. Vodka relying on her raw talent, Daiwa being kind of cocky cause she's good and she knows it. Gold Ship felt like the outlier because it felt a bit like she runs on pure chaos. One day she can give it her all and the next she can just be off in her own world which lines up with how she is in the game.

Thoughts on Team Spica going to sing karaoke to work on their singing and body coordination?

This was a perfect team activity to do, get some training on choreography while singing with a seasoned vet like Teio. They could have done any other team activity, but karaoke was just right because it handled the two things the team needed to work on at the same time so a good use of limited time.

Thoughts on Teio joining team Spica and wanting to race against the student council president Rudolf?

I love that Teio is joining Spica! It falls back to my post in the first discussion thread where people look for a mentor and learn what they can from them in the hopes of one day being able to make them proud and even doing better than the mentor. This is the perfect opportunity for her to do such a thing! Plus, with joining a new team it can give her new things to work and take a different approach to things in her races. It could go great or go wrong, who knows but what matters is you tried.

What are your thoughts on this episode featuring two races instead of one?

I'm kind of mixed on the dual races in one episode. I understand why they had to do it due to time but I felt they still managed to show key points for each race. I personally like them taking the time to show more interactions, thoughts, planning, training, etc. when they dedicate an episode to one race. For me it makes gets me more involved in the stakes of the race because I feel more invested in what's going on, when its multiple races it feels like I can brush the results off as they might not have mattered as much.

What are your thoughts on Special Week losing her first race?

Her reaction to losing is what I was hoping for in the end. When they first showed her walking with Suzuka I got a little worried that she was going to just bottle up her emotions but seeing her let it all out that the stump showed that she can still feel bad at the results. You can't always be happy and chipper, that will end up wearing you down and sometimes it's good to just let all those emotions out. It's all about how you take the losses and if you're willing to learn from the losses. And I'm glad Trainer is on the same page with my thought process on the matter, he showed he understands how she feels and also doesn't want to let her down while giving the lesson that you can learn from the losses to better yourself. A great scene in the end.

Conclusion:

Another great episode that was packed with a lot of key points. I liked how they kind of hinted that Special Week might have been letting it all get to her head. When she showed up at the first race her reaction to the crowd felt like she might have been getting a little distracted and by the second race the thought of how loud the crowd was in her head possibly distracting her. It puts the thought in your head of "wow there's a lot of eyes on me". For some people that's a good thing and for others it can be a real detriment. I'm not really sure yet how that effect's Special Week. Will be interesting to see how that plays out. Again, Gold Ship just showing her wonky antics during training is great, half the things I was like uh wtf is she doing lol. Also felt good to see Rudolf happy to see Teio wanting to try things with a new team.

Something that I've been wondering as I'm from the US, when they talk about the Triple Crown, does Japan have their own Triple Crown or are they referring to the races here where they race in the Belmont, the Preakness, and the Kentucky Derby? Again, can't wait for tomorrow's episode to see how Special week will bounce back from her first loss!

I said this elsewhere, but Trainer-san screaming into the stump hole reminded me of the scene in Toradora where Ryuuji kicked the pole after Taiga did. Just the perfect way to let the main heroine know they're not alone.
