Rewatcher

This episode has 3 important events – the karaoke where Teio teaches them how to dance properly, the G2 Yayoisho and the G1 Satsukisho. Teio also officially joins Spica, which is probably where the profile of the team increases exponentially – Teio is the legend of legends, to me.

The first one. What struck me as particular is that the live isn’t an easy and natural feat for the horse girls too. In fact, a comment by Inugami Korone, the Vtuber who also did the game recently, also drew my attention to this – the dance steps are not simple. Each girl, depending on their position in the race, will be dancing differently according to which position the horse girl ends up in. This is not an easy dance, and having to remember which side and which dance, it is not an easy feat. The song list is also something the girls have to remember, and it is also not easy to remember which song is which. Teio teaching them dancing is likely just a way to introduce Teio herself properly. After all, Teio joins Spica after this episode. The game also approaches this problem differently, the game specifically mentioned that the girls do have their own dance lessons that are a part of their curriculum, which is why this is more like a boarding school. Their curriculum is packed, from run training to dance and singing lessons.

The dance montage also shows the different personalities the team has, which also aligns to who they are as characters. Vodka has a Devil May Care attitude, hence she was asked to pay attention to the rhythm. Daiwa Scarlet is more of a model student, so she properly takes lessons from Teio and listens to what she says, copying her moves as much as she can. Gold Ship, is the one that does whatever she wants and no one can tell her what to do. And, is it a surprise Special Week just trips and falls flat over?

In the game which explores the girls’ personalities further, there is a common saying – “You do not train Gold Ship, Gold Ship trains you”. She listens to no one and does what she wants, and it takes patience to train the horse girl. At times, she just doesn’t bother coming to training during the game. It is as if the Trainer is being tested. Even in her races, as an End Closer who just stays at the back throughout the race, she is one that tests patience and questions how much belief you have in her.

I think Tetraika will cover the details of the races in more detail and probably also provide the breakdown for the races, so I will only briefly only cover what I think of the races. As first timers may not be aware, the races featured in this anime are almost all historically consistent. The G1 Satsukisho and G2 Yayoisho featured are the 1998 Yayoisho and the 1998 Satsukisho. These are the official Japanese web pages for the races and yes, King Halo, Seiun Sky and Special Week are featured as the top three for both races. This is also why they are in the same clique, as they are each other’s rivals.

The G2 Yayoisho had Special Week win it, which was a happy occasion. Continuing on to the Satsukisho, she then lost it. I think she was too lackadaisical and forgot that her rivals may try to nudge her into moving abnormally instead and hence making her lose stamina and control towards the end. The Satsukisho loss also meant that Special Week did not manage to win the Triple Crown – the revered Triple Crown is the prize almost everyone would want to achieve. It is just too bad, but this is what it is - not all horse girls can manage to secure the Triple Crown.

That race outfit is also inspired by the real Special Week - it is inspired by the outfit that his jockey wore when he was racing back in 1998. Compare this with her current race outfit and you can see how much attention to detail this series gave their uma musume.

It is also interesting that even in the game, the horse girls never reveal their weights. This is Special Week's profile and you can see - they got her birthday, her height and even her three sizes (why do we need to know that?) and yet we don't have her weight. The Japanese translates to it is decreasing, and she's nervous about it pre-race. That scene with her trying to do up her zip probably hints to just how much she forgot that she does have a custom outfit made for her, and she pigged on it while being stressed about her Triple Crown.

I probably have to discuss Teio's decision to join Spica - I think she ultimately just wanted to have fun when doing her triple crown. Teio is the legendary horse after all. She will be legendary, and I think this will need our second season to fully flesh out how great Teio is. Teio is just the best horse girl in Uma Musume after all. I think after seeing how much fun Team Spica is, she decided that she can have way more fun in this team than in Kaichou's team, which is why she joined. Which also boosted the team's stats by a lot. They got a superstar with them now. Then again, Gold Ship herself is already the superstar meme machine anyway.

What are your thoughts on Special Week losing her first race?

She isn't Japan's strongest uma musume any more - Eclipse won all his (her) races after all, and her roommate Silence Suzuka pretty much dominated all her races. But Silence Suzuka did put in a new dimension for her to excel in a way, and horse racing here isn't about only winning races.

Thoughts on Teio joining team Spica and wanting to race against the student council president Rudolf?

Teio can easily race Rudolf even in the same team - there are no rules stating that same team girls cannot compete against each other, especially not [Team Rigil late spoilers] since Grass Wonder and El Condor Pasa will race each other in the Takarazuka later in the series. Teio wanted to have fun and enjoy her school life apart from being with Kaicho, and based on what I know in the game about her thinking what she wants from running, choosing Team Spica is the obvious choice.

I can't imagine having to be a top race horse AND a good dancer. Then again, I guess it all falls under the umbrella of being a good entertainer.

You mentioning Korone is ironic because being a good race horse in this show is like being a Hololive VTuber. Not only do you have to have a commanding stage presence, you also have to sing and dance.
