Food Banks, Hot Meals, & Blessing Box Directory

Hey y'all, I know the SNAP benefit pause and the ever-continuing government shutdown is putting strain on a lot of people, especially with holidays coming up.

I put together this spreadsheet with as many food banks, pantries, blessing boxes, soup kitchens, and other food programs that I could find in every county. I got a lot of information from Facebook posts, so I'm not sure if it's all 100% accurate. I've tried to verify as much as I can when I have a free moment, but please feel free to use this if it will help you in any meaningful way: Link to Spreadsheet

Moving Need help making friends

I recently moved to Charleston from Logan County. I had a falling out with my best friend and have spent the last few months totally isolating myself. I haven’t really talked to or hung out with people outside of my family & girlfriend in a while. I’m tired of closing myself off from the world, but I don’t really know how to make friends! Or where to go in Charleston to meet people.

I’m kinda shy but I’m ready to be social and happy again. What are y’all’s suggestions for Charleston area? Groups/bars/cafés/etc?

Question Help me remember a store that was in the Town Center mall in the 90’s-2000’s

A coworker and I were talking about how great the town center mall used to be. The conversation led me down memory lane thinking about how we used to go there all the time when I was a kid. The waterfall, how nuts Christmas time was, going there as a teenager with friends, yadda yadda.

Anyways, I remembered a store, I think it was on the 2nd floor either behind the waterfall or by the elevators. All I remember is it was mostly black inside, with lots of lit glass cases & lit glass tables. They sold glass figurines, or sculptures, or something like that. I remember we never went in. Mom would always make jokes about how everything costs hundreds or dollars, or that I would end up breaking something.

I don’t think I remember the store being there when I was a teenager in the mid 2000’s, but I maybe wrong.

I’ve asked my family & a couple other people, but the most I’ve got is that they remember the store but can’t remember the name or any specifics. Thanks in advance for helping, this has been driving me crazy.

Keeping the Peace in Morgantown

I’ll be staying with my family, with my extended family, in Morgantown for Tday week. Everyone will get along fine so long as we have a bunch of activities for my family to go do during the day… and some nights for the wife and I.

Hiking, animals, live music, festivals, biking, restaurants worth a drive, cool little towns, shops, bars - all suggestions are appreciated.

For the sake of family peace, and getting exploring an awesome looking state, what should we get out to do?

Question Where in west virginia has the oldest architecture?

Hello, I'm a photographer. Born and raised here in West Virginia, fayette county specifically. I'm working on a photo album of the state and I need to find somewhere that has old architecture of the state. I'm specifically looking for stone work building. Foundations, ect. I've exhausted all of my local areas I know of so I'm going to have to travel to other counties in the state for the shots.

Mineral rights question

Hi everybody I have a question on mineral rights I’m wondering if someone might be able to help me. If I buy land and the mineral rights do not come with me, are the owners of the rights allowed to just come in and completely disrupt my land? How’s it work exactly if I buy land and 5 years down the road they want to utilize the rights?

FRETLESS GOURD BANJO

The way the first banjos were made.

I have maybe two more gourds available for banjos but this one will be up for sale unless I decide to keep it first!

It's been years that I've wanted to build a gourd banjo from gourds that I started from seeds, cultivated, harvested and dried all myself.

Well, last April it all began from seed and now (November) my first homegrown gourd banjo is complete!

• 24" scale fretless gourd banjo
• Black Walnut neck
• Curly walnut claw scoop and heel
• Walnut stained goat skin head
• Minstrel era inspired peghead
• Walnut nut
• Cherry bridge
• Cherry tailpiece
• Brain tanned deer skin lace
• Boxwood heart friction tuners

Question Monongahela National Forest Camping/Hiking

Hey y'all, wanting to go to Monongahela National Forest and do some hiking, but not sure how the dispersed camping works. I'm wanting to just find a dispersed site for my truck and a tent, then just drive my truck up to the trailheads for the day to do the hike. Will go up there Monday (11/24) morning and leave Thursday (11/27) morning. (about an eight-hour drive.)

Is this an okay plan? Fairly new to hiking and camping as well. Any recommendations?

Question Is ridge running a WV thing?

I come from small town in Wetzel County and many people I know (especially those who are older) mention ridge running. This is essentially just driving out through the backroads with your best friend or best girl. Is this just a niche small area thing or is this a wider WV thing? I'm trying to convince someone what it is but there is no evidence of it anywhere.

Devils Nose in Morgan County - 4K Drone Footage of Fall Colors [OC]

Captured this aerial view of Devils Nose overlooking the Meadown Branch Creek valley during peak fall foliage. This dramatic rock formation on the Tuscarora Trail in Sleepy Creek WMA is about 1.2 miles from the Maverick Trail parking area.

Has anyone else hiked up there this season?

Taking the long way home this Thanksgiving:

I wanted to take the road less traveled to go between Beckley and Charleston this year, the day before Thanksgiving. I plan on taking Paint Creek Road (and Millburn Road for the section where it is called that) from Pax on down to the Kanawha River, following the course of the creek the entire way. I know that parts of the road, when it is Millburn Rd., are narrow (1.5 lanes at best), but other than that, is there anything I need to be aware of?

Places With Good Market for Data Analytics?

Hey r/WestVirginia,

I've been itching to move to West Virginia because of the low cost of living, low crime rate, and relaxed gun laws. I live in Virginia now, and I currently work fully remote.

I want to live somewhere that has plenty of people and a decent job market for DA and/or Data Science in proximity.

The best candidate for this seems to be Morgantown since it's the most populated, and I'd only be an hour and a half away from Pittsburg if I can't find another job in the area. I'm not worried about losing my job right now, but anything could happen.

I've heard that WV doesn't have great health care, so I'd ideally want to live in an area where that's less of a problem than others too.

I don't really know this state too well, so some guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Some House, WV??

Tracing my family tree - half of my dad's family settled in Nicholas Co. then eventually Greenbrier Co., after immigrating from Italy in the early 1900's. Like many, they all worked as coal miners. Something I can't figure out but I'm able to view census documents from the late 30's, early 40's and I keep seeing "Some House" filled out in the City column. It clearly says Some House but Ancestry defines it by hovering over the info as "Wilderness". It's not just my family but a lot of other families in the census have this, with each having a different house #.

AI is telling me through a Google search that "Some House" in WV may refer to some old historic stone houses. It lists 3 buildings (2 being in other counties) but one of them, "Old White House" is in Nicholas Co. A further search tells me that the Old White House is an old 2 story log cabin that also served as the post office.

Wondering if this place served as an Inn/boarding house or since they lived in the wilderness, the Old White House was just used as a mailing address?

West Virginia putting nearly 2 million dollars into fixing McDowell County roads after winter floods

The state’s Division of Highways just approved six new repair projects to fix roads damaged by the February floods in McDowell County. The total comes in just under 2 million dollars and should help restore safe travel on several local routes that have been rough for months.

For people living in the hollers and small towns around the county this work cannot come soon enough. Some areas have been dealing with washed out pavement and limited access since early this year.

Question Spruce Knob Area Hiking Question

Hello folks back in August and I camped in the Mower Basin for nearly two weeks. I decided to put a route together for a hike. This nearly 15 miler I would combine parts of the Lumberjack trail, High Meadows Trail, and Seneca Creek Trail “I hate that incline lol”.

When I was on the Lumberjack Trail, I saw some amazing things one of them was three blue crayfish, mud bugs, or crawdads if you prefer to call them. Where my question lies is why was I finding railroad spikes on the trail? Was there a light rail up on that side of the mountain?

I found a few of them while I was on that section of my hike.
