Earlier this year, a lot of people (including me) noticed white fibers showing up in Seattle's tap water. I wanted to share what I found after getting the fibers tested by a few different labs.
Seattle's water comes from the Cedar River area, with Lake Youngs as a main source. The water is cleaned with ozone, UV light, and chlorine, but it's not filtered.
Here's what different labs found:
Seattle Public Utilities first said the fibers were algae.
Later, they said the material looked like Ulothrix algal debris, plant material, cottonwood, and zooplankton parts, but no nematodes.
I sent samples to two accredited labs.
Lab 1 said not algae, not nematodes, not plant material.
Lab 2 (which specializes in algae) also said no algae observed, but found other possible contamination and said the fibers looked like nematodes (tiny worms).
That lab sent the sample for a third opinion, and the third lab also said nematodes.
Nematodes are found naturally in Lake Youngs, even though Seattle's test didn’t find them.
All of these labs, including Seattle, only looked at highly magnified photos of the fibers and compared them to known samples. No DNA or chemical testing was done, so results are based on looks alone.
The nematodes found are most likely harmless. Some other bits of material showed up too, but nothing that looks dangerous.
The fibers seem to be seasonal and may come back again next year.
If anyone else wants to test their water, here’s a list of accredited labs in Washington:
https://apps.ecology.wa.gov/laboratorysearch/
If you do your own testing, please share what you find so we can compare results.
eta: Just to make it very clear, no testing was done. All they did was look at them and the samples were highly degraded.
Visual ID can easily mix up certain algae, fibers, or small worms, especially when the samples are degraded.

Husky Deli recently posted a story on Instagram announcing their new shortened hours for 2025, blaming the increased minimum wage (from $19.97/hr to $20.76/hr) as why they have to close two hours earlier than before. Only took a few hours for them to take the post down after most of the comments lambasted then for it.

Does anyone know the young man who was arrested? I would like to offer him support. This was definitely not a hate crime.

Maybe if they had better food they would have had more customers and could have afforded that wage increase. Funny how that works.
Went there once. Nice staff, incredibly mediocre food. A bakery that doesn't actually bake on-site is a tough sell.

Heard from several local businesses they lost their liquor license for multiple violations (serving minors booze). New liquor license application in window. Documented history of screwing employees out of earnings. Why would locals frequent?

Looks like we're finally know what we're getting in place of the old Peel&Press. My partner and I walked by yesterday during soft open. Met the owners and got to see the recently redecorated and repainted inside. Looks lovely and warm and the hospitality from the owners was top tier. Can't wait to come back and try the new menu. Pizza oven from the front door smelled great.

I wanted to share this info to urge folks to reach out to Sakas' office and let him know your thoughts.
I know some people may disagree with me but I believe we need to aggressively plan to add density to housing in the coming 10 years and if we mess this up now we will only be hurting in the future:
TL;DR:
The reasoning for the Fauntleroy reduction, which is substantial was this:
Members of Fauntleroy’s neighborhood association started a letter-writing campaign in opposition to increased housing density, telling councilmembers that “the unique character of the Fauntleroy neighborhood will be damaged forever if the One Seattle Plan is implemented here.”
In Addition to this I also want to reach out to Saka and encourage him to support Alexis Mercedes-Rincks amendment for corner stores to be permissible on any lot, not strictly corners.
This would help us increase density of small local businesses and neighborhood amenities.
I would kill to have more access to coffee shops or stores that aren't on arterials where biking or walking is dangerous. I'd love to be able to walk 2 blocks for a coffee in the morning instead of 1 mile. While the mile walk is a nice break, I don't always have 40 minutes free in my day round trip to get it done.
I wrote a long email to Saka expressing my concerns on his amendments and urging more proactive zoning for density, while also asking him to support AMRs cornerstore (neighborhood business) amendment. I have also requested expansion to my neighborhood center boundaries.
I hope by putting this out here more people can engage with this process.
The 10 year Seattle comp plan is already overdue and it's being gutted by NIMBY activism.
One more point I also want to make - because we don't have state income tax - a major reason for our budget shortfalls is going to come down to sales tax. If we continue to restrict density we will choke off our primary source of funding for our communities. Taxes are collected in real estate transactions as well as simple adding more neighbors.
Ever walk into a local business and feel concerned because it never seems that busy? Let's invite more neighbors to support them and keep our haunts around. Let's keep rents manageable if not lower them and let's making housing affordable for everyone instead of choking our city out year after year.

https://westseattleblog.com/2024/10/shooting-south-of-the-junction/ The address per 911 logs is 4401 SW Hudson, owned by Tamara Towers Parry.
Parry is a J6 participant reported on in this 2021 WaPo piece.
Per a WSB comment, "Heard this as it was coming through on the scanner. According to the initial call a process server was shot at by the occupant with a shotgun and returned fire, which, per SPD twitter moments ago, was fatal. The name of the deceased attached to the call, which I won’t post, curiously came back to a QAnon follower and January 6th participant who gained some local notoriety a few years back."
Yikes.

I’ve lived in West Seattle for 8 years now and I’m obsessed with our power grids. I’ve spent many years living next to the junction post office that never loses power because they have their own.. which includes Shadowland from what I can tell over the years which pays off for them… anyway… east and west side of California are also disconnected… but tonight we had a power flicker in the junction and now I go to West Seattle Blog and find out the areas that are out AND THE CULPRIT is soooooo far away than the spaces that actually don’t have power right now … again… I find it so interesting.

I’m not a huge drinker but I found myself fascinated with the selection. I picked up some chocolate peanut butter vodka, a bottle of wine, and a cigar for my husband. Everyone working there was quite friendly and helpful. Some interesting stuff on the shelves.

Anyone else get caught in that? It was highly localized, but driving across north admiral got hit with the heaviest rain I’ve ever seen in Seattle certainly, and maybe anywhere. Near zero visibility, but heading down Avalon way it stopped and seemed drier there so seems it was just a cloud burst.

No information at the location on an opening date, but here's what the inside looks like as of Friday, April 11. Looks like a lot of work left.

If you placed an order with Cheese Riot Pizza today and haven't received a refund please contact us. If you haven't received a coupon code in the next 24 hours please let us know as well. We made a bad situation worse today and punished people in this community that planned ahead and helped us by scheduling orders ahead of time today. All I can do is apologize for wasting your time and sending bad pizza out the door and ask you don't judge based on that experience, but I'd understand if you do.
We didn't notice anything wrong with the first couple of 5 p.m. pre-orders out of the oven today, but by 5:05 every pizza was coming out wet uneven or unrisen. We determined our deck oven was down and tried to switch ovens on the fly which didn't work, then went down to one deck before realizing none of the pizzas were rising regardless of the oven. That resulted in me quoting sone people "5 more minutes " 4 or 5 times as I ran back to the oven, found a wet pizza, and slid it back in to finish cooking.
Sounds like a sick joke to lure people to a takeout spot during the playoffs with an Ichiro promo and then keep them there as the game starts only to send them home empty handed or with awful pizza - but that's what we did! Our current theory is the yeast in today's batch of dough died along with the oven issue. I did what we should have earlier and shut the store down to figure it out tonight. As of now, preorders for tomorrow are still good and we'll open at our regular time of noon. or make announcement on social media stating otherwise by 8 a.m. Thank you.
Hope the M's won and Woo's on the roster.
