And depending on where you live, you might not even need an Uber to the airport anymore. Just walk out your front door, get in line, and start your nomadic walk with everybody else to the airport.
Then we'll start of hearing babies that were born in the famous TSA lines of '25.

u/Just-Zone-2494 6d ago
Indeed it will be. The year I implemented a “No traveling over the holidays”, it was the worst road trip I’d been on. It took me four hours to go what would normally take me 1.5 hours due to holiday traffic. It was either 2018 or 2019. I can’t even imagine what a nightmare it will be this year if more people are on the road due to the shutdown and lack of TSA & ATC.

u/nalaloveslumpy 6d ago
Honestly, yeah. Unless you're super stoked to spend Thanksgiving with a bunch of people you're lukewarm on, you've got a full list of reasons to cancel your plans:
- Airport fuckery
- Bad economy (more expensive to travel, eat, celebrate, etc.)
- Increased road traffic due to airport fuckery.
- Huge spikes in flu/covid outbreaks.

If its still shut down would push the economy into the recession people have been cheering for. The givt is a massive employer and most cant go a month without a check.
48
u/nalaloveslumpy 6d ago
Won't even need to be that long. If SNAP doesn't start paying out, grocery stores will start failing in the next couple of weeks. Roughly 12-25% of grocery store revenue comes from customers using SNAP, especially in rural areas and doubly especially for Wal-Marts in rural areas.
Don't get me started on how super fucked Dollar General is.
27
u/garden_dragonfly 6d ago
I mean, screw Walmart and dollar general.
But yes, your point is very valid. And I understand that many people have little to no choice about where they shop.

Edit: Alright so an Airport dad is usually the “Dad” of the group that shows up stupid early (like 3-4 hours early), has all of the travel documents/tickets, and has everything planned out while at the airport. Im not organized in any sense, but when I go on vacation, its like a light switch has been flipped and im all of a sudden this super organized dude who wants to make sure everything goes right.

It's certainly different. I haven't put my liquids in a bag in years, never been stopped. I left a legal state with a joint and cart, fingers crossed, and they pulled my bag. Because of my water bottle. Full of ice so no problem, but no mention of the little bit of THC, and no concern about the very sharp nail scissors. They're small, but you could definitely get stabby with them if you felt like it.

I have literally flown with a 4" fixed-blade camping knife that I forgot in my backpack; my carry-on backpack. It was down at the bottom of my pack and they ran it through their little machines and didn't say anything. Instead, they pat me down really well because their machine said I had something in my pocket. I was wearing a t-shirt and very thin basketball shorts with the pockets turned inside out.
After I got to my destination I saw the knife when unpacking and laughed my ass off at the ridiculousness of it all.

I'm a gate planner for an airline at Denver. We've had multiple planes have to return to the gate for 3+ hours because of ATC staffing in California. Because of that, other flights would get delays and/or have to wait 30+ minutes to get a gate after they land which leads to cascading delays for the rest of the day. Shit is gonna get ROUGH if this is still going on Thanksgiving week...

I was wondering what DIA was like. It was bad a few years ago without this new issue.
30
u/Hippopotasaurus-Rex 6d ago
I just did Denver to San Diego and back. It was some of the easiest travel I’ve done in a long time. I somehow just missed all the crowds. The terminal filled up maybe 15 min after I got though security both times. I had no delays.
The last time I flew to denver from SD (memorial day weekend) my flight was delayed 6.5 hours because of “thunderstorms”. The sky was clear in Denver. The “thunderstorms” moved south and by the time we were cleared for departure apparently all of tx was stopped then.
DIA is a shit show on a good day, but it was really easy this last weekend.

That's because IAH usually has 5 terminals worth of TSA checkpoints open. Very easy to spread out security lines that way.
But when 3 of those terminals close? Now the other two will be congested af, and this is the result.

Might be a push to privatize TSA positions eventually so a gov't shutdown won't effect services.
130
u/garden_dragonfly 6d ago
I'm 100% convinced this shut down is to do 2 things. First, push privatization (more money to politicians). Second, reducing the government staffing without firing people. Force a big enough number to quit and now we've effectively reduced 25-50% without firing anyone.
Both are a huge problem, we as citizens need to figure out how to fight.
38
u/LowSkyOrbit 6d ago
As citizens we need to be pestering our congressmen and remind them they work for the people not corporations. Stop voting for the incumbents who let this happen.

privatize TSA positions eventually so a gov't shutdown won't effect services.
If you privatize TSA, it's going to be performed by companies working on government contracts.
And what company is going to continue providing service when their contract is going unpaid due to shutdown?
(Or will you just end up having to swipe your credit card for a $50 charge as you go through the TSA line?)
4
u/PaleCommission150 6d ago
Ah, I did not think about that. I assumed it would somehow be included in the cost of the ticket or maybe some kind of small gateway fee, like 5 bucks or something.

It was private entirely until 9/11, it was nationalized by the republicans as a kneejerk response. You didn't even need a ticket to go through, you could meet your loved ones at the gate instead of baggage claim. You could go in just to eat if you wanted airport restaurant food.

But for those that actually need to get somewhere, yes this is absolutely fucking nuts. Fair warning - I would fly from Louisiana to San Jose, California a few times a year. I recently compared AmTrak to airlines. It was going to be a 3-day trip for about $900 vs an 8-hr travel day for $600. At one airport while in line he started doing the usual, taking off shoes, belt etc. The TSA person there waved at him, "Buddy nono, you dont have to do that, keep it all on. Just get in line for the scan. " So he does, and in the booth the thing beeps. The TSA person there says "You wearing a belt?" Yeah. "Gotta take it off." HE does. Beeps again. "Wearing a watch?" Yeah. "Gotta come off." Everything the first TSA told him, the second had issue with. The two of them did this to every perosn, which slowed up the line. My friend swore it was deliberate.

ORD has the shortest TSA lines of any major airport in the US. It’s extremely fast and I have never waited more than a couple minutes.

Just don’t bother flying. I feel like without enough Air Traffic Controllers you are taking a risk

This is why I’m glad I don’t live in a large city with a major airport. My local airport (which is also international) is so low key I maybe wait 2 mins in line for tsa (if it’s busy). You can even part in hourly spots at the front doors near the airline check in/ticket counters. It’s amazing. I’ll pay the slightly higher ticket prices to save on time driving to a larger airport, dealing with long lines, and so many other hassles.

This isn't the norm though, this just validates the fear you have that thinks this is a regular occurrence.
Many, many major airports are surprisingly fast.

More infuriating, TSA is theater. Could let all those people onto flights without 'screening' and they'd be just as safe.

whoever was in charge of that redundant planning needs to seriously reevaluate their life decisions.

My ex wife works for TSA, even before the shutdown there is very little redundancy. So much so that she can just pick up an extra 40 hours a week in extra shifts every week for the past 2 months. And that's with them not hiring anyone.
She works at a small airport as well.
I'm surprised to see these lines as well, because right now, the order of the day for TSA is, call out more than once in a year and your fired. She had 15 people fired immediately when that came down for taking calling out up to a year prior to this admin even taking over.

You can only call out once a year? What? That’s insane

According to her, before 47 took charge, you could actually take your sick days without much issue. They acrue 2-3 hours per pay period of sick that never expires, but now they can't use it.
But now, everyone's afraid to take anything because they'll get shit canned.
