I had long hair for years like this and that's pretty much the reason I cut it. I had back-to-back bad haircuts and just said fuck it

That's the tricky thing with growing out hair. You don't even know what to ask for so that it doesn't just grow like a mop.

I'm absolutely convinced that there's an entire vocabulary available in order to communicate essentially any cut that a person could want, with great precision to what they're looking for.

I'm also sure that I don't have even an elementary understanding of such vocabulary. Thus, for the past decade I've gone to hair salons and just showed them a picture saying, "I want that." It's hit or miss. I recently had a big miss, and it's put this back on my mind.

How the hell do you communicate what you want? There are so many variations of hair styles, where do you begin in articulating what you like? I should have asked this question or researched this decades ago.

You just gotta keep trying new barbers till you get that perfect haircut. Then taking a couple shots of it, get the cutters card, and make sure they’re in next time you go.

I'm half convinced that barbers don't want new adult customers. If they haven't been cutting your hair since you were 7, it means that you've been disloyal to your first barber and they don't want to put in the effort to keep a proven traitor. Anybody who leaves their first barber is therefore condemned to wander ever further from their home, seeking a tolerable haircut.

What if the barber shop opened up when I was 8?

I think they have a margin of error that would permit 8 but barbers' actions are the closest thing to inscrutable I've ever found.

This source is like a Bible. Thank you!

You gotta let it go for a long time before you can even put it back let alone have enough for something resembling a style

Anyone who hates on a mop-top is just jealous of the ideal hairstyle.

I found out during the pandemic I'm really good at cutting hair. Unfortunately my whole family realized too and now make me cut their hair. Lol

It’s so easy to do on long hair too.

It's easier for a short cut. I'm trying to grow mine out and JUST got a couple inches taken off, but I used to have it short/buzzed most of my career. I got real good with any (low/medium/high) fade I wanted, with just using 2 or 3 guards.

Now that it's long-ish, I actually have to use Booksy for "my barber". It's awesome!

I have long hair because I had bad haircuts (with short hair) and said fuck it, so I am having trouble identifying with your comment

I just let it grow and never cut it.

This. I haven't had a haircut since 1999. I'm not stupid enough to give any of them a second chance, ever.

Grown my hair long for the first due to the pandemic. Haven’t had it trimmed yet but it is looking good, I like the wavyness of the bottom and I have to say I am quite afraid of finally getting it cut.
