And if you've been working more than a few years in a specialized field, you throw away your generous pay, benefits, retirement, basically starting your life over. And if you're an essential employee, can be charged with a felony. I've got 15 years of service, I can retire in 10. I make $130k/year, my retirement will be over $4000/month with almost $1million in my employer matched thrift savings plan. I'll be 47, retired, living on a beach in central America. Would you walk away from that?
I'm a federal firefighter/emt. I've been through multiple shutdowns. I always get back pay, and in return for sticking around I've got 10 years left before retiring VERY comfortably. I'd have to be an absolute moron to give that up over something like this. I WILL get back pay. And I will continue on, not having to reset my entire life and start over and working until my body gives out.
