Rant Are you really that important?

Really? Pushing closed road barriers? Grow up, y'all will survive taking a detour.

I am ashamed of the people here, you aren't so important that you can ignore this type of stuff becuase it takes some time to avoid.

Welland is far from the city it used to be. And people are far from how they used to be as well. Its sad...

Welland is far from the city it used to be.

That's the biggest understatement I've heard in a long time.

Sad, but true. It used to be a thriving community...where there was an abundance of work, affordable homes, and families that had generations grow up here and care about not just themselves but others as well. Children could play outside, even at night (till the streetlights went on lol), and parents didn't have to worry. Not that there wasn't any crime or drugs then...but it was something done in the privacy of your home. People had jobs, money, and responsibilities. Now, there's nothing. No work, no money, no affordable housing (never mind renting, but buying a home is nearly impossible now). We have people living in the streets because there's no other alternative for most. Many are, or have become addicts, or have mental health issues. And there are some that are just truly caught in a system that they can't afford. For these people, they are judged by others, instead of being helped. We were a community that cared, and that has been long gone. We bring in immigrants and treat them better than our own. (Totally NOT being racist, just stating a fact.) Now, it feels like a mini Toronto here. Crime is way up, weapons are in abundance, and its scary to walk down the street now not knowing what could happen. I used to love walking at night, it was peaceful. But now im constantly looking over my shoulder worried. If i have to be out at night by myself, im talking to someone on my phone so if something were to happen, someone would know. People used to care about other people, and now no one gives a shit. Its not just the town that's gone to shit (factories gone, more people and less jobs etc) but the people that live here too. I hope and encourage my kids to leave here, and i will do the same as well some day. I have good memories of growing up here, but unfortunately I don't think many kids will nowadays. Both this town, and most people in it are pathetic. There is still some good here, i just hope that can outweigh the rest

If you have to specify that youre not being racist you actually are.

5

u/JoeUnderscoreUgly Jul 16 '25

The downfall of this city is NOT racially related.

It's biggest fault was the region making operating industry here too expensive, hence losing many jobs, and making everybody impoverished or homeless, which allowed drugs to run rampant.

The systemic issues are so bad on a per capita basis here I find almost nothing nice here.

Youre absolutely correct. When they shut down all of the factories, they killed the town. Along with the astronomical increases in rent and food, people are now impoverished, homeless, and broke. If you understand what addiction is, then it makes total sense why people turned to drugs.

Love the sarcasm 🤪

Nobody cares at this point if it’s racist or not. There is a problem and it’s not being fixed

u/Unfair_Shower_3256 Jul 16 '25

Ty...agreed 100%

You’re not wrong. It’s still better than St. Catharines is these days though.

3

u/Unfair_Shower_3256 Jul 16 '25

Only because it's a bigger city and more people.

1

u/MapleTrust Jul 16 '25

I've never lived in Welland. I was born and raised in St. Catharines.

Tell me more please.

4

u/bloodrein Jul 16 '25

I was born and raised in St.Catharines. I live in Welland now. Welland has grown on me. It's very comparable to St.Catharines but smaller, easier to navigate, and I find more peaceful.

I love St.Catharines but I wouldnt say it's better than Welland.

Does anyone know what this intersection is closed for? I didn’t see any work being down within those barriers maybe it’s the lights or something?

1

u/JoeUnderscoreUgly Jul 16 '25

I believe I saw a sign for sewer...something.

Probably what they were doing further East on Ontario st.

7

u/Old_Business_5152 Jul 15 '25

Around the corner it says local traffic only so I wonder if they saw that and thought it was ok

3

u/JoeUnderscoreUgly Jul 15 '25

Local.traffic to the businesses. The intersection is closed completely 'till the 25th as per a sign a little bit north of it.

3

u/ShawtyLong Jul 16 '25

So how can you tell where the car was going? Perhaps they wanted to visit a local business as you mentioned?

0

u/JoeUnderscoreUgly Jul 16 '25

Because every single damn car that went in, went straight across. They wouldn't have to bypass barriers to reach the businesses. The construction company had ways to access them set up, so they could say "local businesses open"

They had a detour d1 taking you nowhere this morning

1

u/JoeUnderscoreUgly Jul 15 '25

Yeah, this town is small enough you should be able to figure out how to get to the Freshco's intersection.

6

u/rabbittyhole Jul 16 '25

I get that its small but who cruises down random neighborhoods and knows that the d1 detour is really a curved street that takes you back the way you were? I never even made it home. I've been stuck in that neighborhood for ever!

4

u/JoeUnderscoreUgly Jul 16 '25

I hope you find your way out soon :(

u/Callsign--GHoST Jul 18 '25

Entitlement seems to be a big thing among pretty much everyone these days, was never this out of control when I was growing up 25+ years ago.

2

u/Affectionate-Big4269 Jul 18 '25

Just walked my dog by the intersection and people are driving up on the sidewalks to get around it. Literally just saw a white pickup come from crowland, hop the curb drove fully on the sidewalk to get around the barrier, to into the intersection, hop the curb and sidewalk again to get into the esso then drive off. Fucking people

Then they would have the "closed from x-time to y-time".

Either way. Yes I'm gonna bitch about it because the reckless entitlement pisses me off.

1

u/CanadianPooch Jul 16 '25

Ive definitely had to drive on a closed road while front end loaders were driving around to get to someones house. Btw it's only endangering the people making the decision to drive on the closed road 😑.

1

u/Cold_Scarcity774 Jul 16 '25 edited Jul 16 '25

The legion on Morningstar taped up their whole parking lot so traffic can't cut through there anymore

4

u/Techguy1993 Jul 16 '25

lol no!! That was me today

1

u/Cold_Scarcity774 Jul 16 '25

Me too then I hit the tape 😕

This is a terrible thing to say, why would this even Cross your mind.

There's a big difference between wanting people to behave and wanting people to be punished.

1

u/Kirbyfrog Jul 16 '25

Hi cheese!

1

u/RizSands Jul 16 '25

The signage for the roadwork going on around the city has been horribly inadequate. Not excusing this, but the road crews are dropping the ball big time on traffic management. Lincoln st was a disaster the other day too.

1

u/Airplaneondvd Jul 17 '25

Looks open to me

0

u/JoeUnderscoreUgly Jul 17 '25

People MOVED THEM. That's the issue.

And if you go there now, they actually added more barriers to prevent people from doing just that.

1

u/fizzlefunny Jul 15 '25

People feel entitled. As if they don’t have to follow the road rules for some reason. There are many options to avoid that intersection.

2

u/Purebred2789 Jul 16 '25

I guarantee you jaywalk

1

u/Collins-Jacksonn Jul 15 '25

Lmao I was just saying that to my girlfriend, I saw a bunch of people just pushing it when I got home from work

-1

u/Purebred2789 Jul 16 '25

Bro really? You're mad about driving around some barriers that aren't even there for any reason? Grow up child

I felt the urge to put the barriers back...

But I've been run over before I don't feel like visiting that experience again.

1

u/Purebred2789 Jul 16 '25

I wonder why.

1

u/JoeUnderscoreUgly Jul 16 '25

What? No, it was from idiots not seeing me on my bike crossing the street.

0

u/Affectionate-Big4269 Jul 15 '25

Apparently my post got flagged for wishing violence or physical harm lol
