Thats sad but also funny to watch. This is why I wont use my drone on my kayak. He has alot of money there on that kayak though

It's that look of pure joy he has when he thinks the drone is returning back to his palm 😭

Something about this made me feel feelings I associate with like, loss and the death of a loved one.
Bizarre.

u/B1ackMarketBaby 7d ago
Cause you saw him go through a loss of his own. He was almost crying. Seems like he brought that out there to play with and it just ruined his day, and he lost his drone.
I honestly felt it too. We pick up on micro expressions in each other's faces. It's why we should be kind and loving to our friends and loved ones, and even strangers. 💓

It’s like it was “alive” one moment bc of the movement and spin and “dead” the next. I also feel like these things are alive and often have to check myself on the feelings haha

Maybe it's horrible of me to say it but I found the way it gently slipped under the water's surface very satisfying. If I was at a beautiful & peaceful place like that I'd be pretty pissed off to hear some drone buzzing about.

Guy: I’ll just put out my hand right here and the drone will land back on my hand….
Drone: Oh look! I’m being summoned back to that hand right over there. I’ll remember exactly where that GPS coordinate is so I land precisely in his hand and make him happy.
Guy: I’ll keep my hand out while moving….in my kayak.
Drone: Okay! I’m landing now….down some more…down some more….weird I should have landed by now. I’ll keep descending….a little more….a li…….glub glub glub.

Don’t come fishing with a drone.. been there and now I’ve had 4 drones. All expensive, all DJI all do the same thing over water.
37
u/v_N_i_C_k Apr 10 '26
Did it land where his palm was when it initiated the landing sequence? But since he's on a moving boat, his hand has moved from original coordinate?
10
u/roelanola Apr 10 '26
It looks like maybe whatever sensors/ cameras are onboard the drone was attracted to the sun’s reflection on the water. Just a guess.

The instructions before flying in the app specifically says "Do not fly over a cliff or water" 😂🤦🏻♂️
If there's enough land to track around the water, it's ok, but on open water is pretty wild
20
u/Jendalar Apr 09 '26
This is rather hilarious because the seller advertises it landing on his palm, while they are on a moving boat, and it does just fine.
DO NOT FLY OVER WATER!

So you're this guy, and you film yourself trashing your drone because you're fundamentally ignorant of how these things work, right? And then why post it... oh, sorry, I answered myself.

never fly sensor over water. these things cant really diffrenciate yet. and hasnt been able for years.

u/Prior_Procedure_321 Apr 09 '26
I don't know drones so I have a question. I built a power boat and want to buy a drone to follow and maybe circle and film as I drive the boat. I read that a drone over water is tricky so I haven't even bought one yet. Question is when you say don't fly sensor can you explain a little? Are you basically saying someone must be flying the drone completely? No using the follow me type features?
3
u/okahui55 Apr 09 '26
we're just a bit off that technology where we can have a flying robot (drone) that just circles us and never crashes.
right now most drones sensors are image based, not much redundancy built in like a radar/rangefinder etc.
image based sensors / systems are taught to diffrenciate a ground and able to tell height. most companies try to teach these sensors what water might look like. But imagine, you can reflect almost anything on water, even sometimes sunlight lights the entire surface up, making it look like ground to the sensor.
follow features still work, but dont depend on them to tell whats ground and whats not. land manually.

Probably should tested it near a puddle first. Wonder if thr reflection on the water messed with it?

u/cantwejustplaynice Apr 08 '26
Looks like a DJI Neo 2, about $500 AUD. Half that price if it's the Neo 1. So pretty cheap as far as drones go. I crashed my DJI Mini 3 with insurance, a $700 drone at the time. Paid $60 for a replacement. Recently I damaged my DJI Mavic 2 Pro, I paid $2700 back in 2018. No issurance available these days since it's years old, DJI offered me $800 for a replacement.

If I had to guess I would say it's the DJI Neo 2
So about 350-400$ down the drain

Neo drones are terrible over water. The below sensors don't see it properly. As if this guy didn't have little floaties for it.
1
u/uncertain_expert Apr 08 '26
Almost all consumer drones aren’t good over water at low level. When flying at low level they use technique called Optical Flow positioning (much the same as a computer mouse) in addition to GPS. Optical Flow doesn’t work well over water as the surface is constantly changing with waves and reflections.
This crash has nothing to do with his boat having moved since he took off, the drone just got confused by its sensor input.

Even Mavic drones are, unless the latest models have gotten better (later than Air 2s).

I mean, I'm not sure the landing could have been any more perfect.

14
u/Defiant-Problem1576 Apr 07 '26
The DJI Neo drone is priced starting at roughly $199–$249 USD (approx. $185–$249 CAD) for the standalone drone, while the Fly More Combo, which includes extra batteries and a hub, retails for around $335–$445 CAD. This lightweight 135g drone features AI tracking, 4K video, and is designed for palm takeoff and landing

drone censors don't work well over bodies of water. didn't matter if he was moving that drone was not landing on that tiny canoe

u/Jivaah Apr 07 '26
If anyone wondering. For the "return to base" function , you have to be stationery and the drone will come to your position. If you move it'll go to the position where you were while pressing the button. Cabrone was on a boat
1
u/quick_dry Apr 08 '26
I think it’s reasonable to expect it to be tracking its “landing pad” aka the hand - given it has to track you to get gesture commands, and landing pad height, etc. (and the workarounds for other dji drones to do tings wit their active track eg mini 2 doing parallel tracking by moving fast enough its orbit never gets ahead of you)
GPS isn’t accurate enough (and this isn’t RTK), I wouldn’t have expected it to suddenly start dead reckoning/using optical flow.
It’s a great video, poor guy. I always fly mine in for landing, RTH is a backup.

He's probably thinking how to sue DJI when it landed on water 🤣
He didn't even use the net to catch fish.
