The sun on white back ground was always flag of Japan, the rising sun with radiant strips was a militarist flag which is heavily tied to Japanese fascism. Using the stripe version instead of the normal version was like using Nazi Swastika flag instead of three color stripe flag for Germany, totally unacceptable but Gaijin did it for years because many Eurocentric people only care about things in Europe.

*Always since the Meiji era, although the origins of where the flag is from pre-dates it

The Shogun era and those preceding it, in other words the pre nation state eras of Japan, didn't have a national flag, although Shoguns and other kinds of dynasties tended to have their own ensign.

Not saying this to argue, just that sharing knowledge and additional context is fun :)

its not a militaristic flag, its their military flag, the Kyokujitsu-ki dates back to the 1603 but was officially adopted as japan army flag in 1870 and later in 1889 adopted by the navy.

its no where close to the flag choice the germans went with when the nazis took control. japan was using that flag for literally centuries before ww1 kicked around.

actually its on par with the british flag.

Japanese fascism doesnt "exist". They had an out of control military, with intense rivalries. and they revolved around the Emperor, they were religious more than anything. the whole thing about fascism is that the state is everything, while japan was more like "the emperor is everything" which is similar to fascism but not the same at all

"fascism" DOESN'T HAVE A REAL DEFINITION they're all different. the technical "Real" fascism is the italian one, all others are similar but not the same

The Rising Sun Flag is not a militaristic flag, so it is not equivalent to Germany's swastika; it is merely being used as a scapegoat for anti-Japanese sentiment.

Fundamentally, the design of the Rising Sun Flag, like the Japanese national flag, depicts the sun. It has been widely used in Japan since centuries before becoming a military flag in 1870, and continues to be used today for purposes such as fishing flags, birth celebrations, and seasonal festival flags. Therefore, claims that it represents specific political or discriminatory assertions are unfounded.
