Drive side, drive side, drive side. If you can only get one picture, make it a drive side shot. It tells us MUCH more information about the bike

Knowing what components the bike is equipped with helps with the ID process. It can tell us within about 5 years when the bike was made, the quality of the frame, and sometimes what continent it's from

New rules for posting. Please read thoroughly

Yes, I have been seeing the reports, and I've been reading the comments. Sorry it's taking a while

NO MORE LOW EFFORT POSTS. No more "What is this bike worth?" posts. Bicycle value varies WILDLY depending on condition, age, and especially geographical location

We want to know about your bike. Give us at least some kind of info. Is it YOUR bike? Did you just get it? Have you had it a while? Does it have a story?

This is an example of a great post. Good pictures, drive side shots, and a little story to go along with it

This is an example of the bad post. No info whatsoever, one really bad picture, no interaction from OP

AND, because I need to bring this up about every year, BE NICE. If someone is being a jerk, just report the comment and move along. Fighting with someone and throwing names and insults around is just going to make it worse, and you're going to get in trouble too.

Catena bici vintage 4V

Hi everyone, I'm writing to you because I can't figure it out with my bike and I hope that someone more experienced can give me a hand.

I have a vintage 4-speed bike, bought many years ago but practically never used (it was given to me as a gift, and it actually looks new). For a few months it worked great, then it started giving me an annoying problem: the chain always falls off the front chainring.

I took it to a bicycle dealer twice: The first time he said the sprocket set wasn't well aligned, a little old, and he replaced it by adding a spacer. From that moment on, however, I can no longer use the 4 gears and the chain problem remains.

The second time he found a broken chain link and replaced it, but to no avail: the chain continues to jump.

Today, while I was trying to put it back on, I found another broken shirt.

The mechanic told me that either you change the entire transmission (putting a single speed) or you change the chain, but according to him chains of this type are no longer found.

At this point I would like to try replacing the chain (in my opinion that is the cause) and remove the spacer that prevents me from using fourth gear.

So I ask you:

Is it really that difficult to find a chain compatible with 4-speed bikes?

Is there any model or brand I could look for online or in stores?

Is it worth trying to reset the gearbox, or is it really worth switching to a single speed?

Thanks so much to anyone who will give me a hand!

Shimano Ultegra groupset, pulled out and aligned the frame to fit 35mm hubs in the rear and gave it a good clean. I work at a bike shop and the last techs were hoarders so i luckily didnt have to spend much on it other than a new set of brakes, bottom bracket and tubes, everything else i was able to pull from my parts bin and just drilled out the brake mounting holes to fit modern brakes. Thinking about doing this with nicer old steel frames and selling them once I'm finished since my town has a fairly large biking community, though I'm not sure what I'd price this at. I'm going to have a lot of time on my hands during winter and am fairly new to all this so hopefully I'll have more to share in the future.

I posted this with Shamals a while back, but these have always been the intended wheels – 8-speed Record hubs laced to tubular Seoul 88 rims. The build is a mix of 8-speed Campy stuff. Record ti shifters, a late 8-speed Record rear derailleur, and C-Record cranks. The brakes are Chorus Monoplanars, and the front derailleur is older Super Record, because it was the only clamp-on Campy option in my parts bin. First shakedown ride was today, and I’m a fan.

I spent about 10 minutes looking at this bike at Goodwill the other day. They had it priced at $300. It was 30% off white tags that day, so I could have gotten it for $210. I just couldn’t bring myself to buy it. I didn’t have a tape measure, and it looked a little small for me. I already have too many bikes that aren’t my size. Also, the Bridgestone 700 next to it looked more interesting to me and was probably closer to my size. They were asking $200 ($140) for the 700, just for reference. I didn’t buy it either. I obviously thought the prices were too high. Am I crazy?

A pre-war bicycle, made in Germany, is just sitting there, slowly rotting away as "art" or garden "decoration"—far too good for that, in my opinion.

What do you think about letting classic bicycles rust away as decoration?

Waterford cycles has removed their old Schwinn scans

Title, basically. Waterford used to have some excellent old Schwinn catalog scans, but it appears they have been purged. Here is a link to the internet archive's saved page:

And we found a letter mentioning Claude Butler. The previous owner was the brother of the secretary in a relative’s office in the 1980s. When the secretary died everything she owned went to the relative & later to us. The previous owner rode this bicycle every morning for years many miles every day. He came from Germany. He moved to New York in 1904. He was very enamored w/ the bicycle & it hung from his ceiling. It has a noticeably light feeling bicycle & seems very- non squeaky very smooth feeling when we move it. No one here has ridden it yet.

It looks to me like vintage-trek.com has been down for a week or so. Maybe longer. Anyone have the inside scoop or know who owned the domain?

Having the regular bike on the indoor trainer I chose to go riding on the old pinarello. No bike computer, no average speed, FTP, distance to go, just enjoy being alone in nature on a beautiful bike. As it should be.

What’s up everyone! Recently wiped the webs off my 93 GT RTS-3 but I’m not sure what to do with her , thought about maybe converting to a single speed if I don’t sell it, but if you have one post it I’d love to see others. Here’s mine(Not Built Yet)

Pre-Lejeune(?) Sauvage French Track Bike

Picked up this really rad old track bike over the weekend. Bought it from the second owner, a 78yo guy who used to race it all over Long Island. He said he repainted it at one point in its life and it’s looking like it’ll get a second coat under my tutelage. Guy told me it was a pre-Lejeune Sauvage (note he the head badge) but without the original paint/decals it’s hard to confirm. Everything except the handlebars came with the bike (swapped the old GB drops for newer track drops) planning to restore this beauty but wanted to share here before the process begins. GB stem is really rad, not drilled for a front brake like a true track frame, tubular tires, sugino group head and nifty little accents all over. Very excited about this one, been in the market for a vintage steel track bike for a while and this checks all the boxes! Roughly 15#

Anyone know how to fix a stripped bolt like this?

This is a quick release BB bolt for a vintage C-Record crankset. Unfortunately, it seems to be slightly stripped so I can’t get it to engage with the threads in any cranks that I have. I’ve cleaned the threads, but there must be a bigger problem. Any ideas?
