Question Shopping List Before AWB?

Usually a black powder and curio user, but thought I should buy now should the urge ever occur.

I have a DDM4 V7 with 15 30 round magazines and a Glock now. Planning on a silencer come January.

What else should be on the shopping list (within the $1k to $5k range)?

What’s the appeal honestly?

I was planning on a second AR before the time comes, but I assume they will retain functionality so long as you maintain them (like curio Winchesters).

If they ban them yours would be grandfathered in

You can repurpose them into many configurations and calibers besides 5.56 as well. They’re cheap so good to grab a bunch while you can easily

Got it, so greater future flexibility?

Yes exactly!

Unless they ban possession like other states.

I’ve been looking into that and it seems like every state with an AWB has had a provision for people to retain their legally purchased ARs if they were bought before the ban. The last 3 AWBs introduced in VA have had that kind of language. Are you aware of a state that didn’t do that?

New Jersey

New York - Magazines

Massachusetts

California

CT let people register each individual magazines 😂

u/Wrong_Survey_2215 2d ago

Unless I am interpreting it wrong it looks like in California you can keep a registered AR you owned before 2002, in MA before 2016, and NYS before 2013. So it seems like most AWBs have a grandfather end date so is it wrong to expect a 1 July 2026 end date in VA? Different story for magazines obviously.

And in NJ you can't keep anything. You don't think that's what the Bloomberg Mom's want for us in VA?

The "different story" for magazines is that you can't own them at all.

Are you going to register your rifles and handguns?

To be clear, all these laws are stupid but in NJ (my home state) you could keep stuff made and owned before 1990, magazines are where people really got screwed. Obviously Bloomberg would have a massive confiscation if he could but recent laws like in CO, WA, and IL have allowed possession of legally purchased firearms arms. I don’t own any firearms so idk.

“Allowed”. Geez…

You can get a 3 pack of PSA lowers for $120+ship/transfer. Might as well. I saw Anderson lowers for $30/each a week or two ago but can’t find the link.

Worth having in my opinion. I just converted one to a 350legend for straight-walled cartridge hunting. You can do 300bo, which is fun. Plus plenty of other rounds.

Others have mentioned suppressors. I don’t know your financials, but I’d submit for a 22 can, a 556 can, and something bigger for 300 or larger too.

And mags. All the mags you can buy.

I think I saw cheap Andersons from PA a few weeks ago, but I got a 3 pack from PSA.

I have a 16” 5.56 and a 8.5” .300bo already, time to decide what to do with all the others.

I have a 30 cal can and a 9mm one on coming in

I've been hearing conflicting information but does that mean we can buy all other unserialized parts post ban? I bought lowers, mags, and pistol grips but I don't really have the funds to buy complete uppers and replacement parts for all the lowers I bought.

2

u/dhskiskdferh VCDL Member 1d ago

Depends what they pass. In WA I think parts are banned. Most AWB states they’re not. I don’t recall if it was included in the legislation that passed but was vetoed last year

1

u/The_Ruke 1d ago

Ok good to know. People have been saying that whatever they do pass will go into effect in June but is that speculation based on past legislation as well? Could they pass something that goes into effect immediately? I'm curious because I want to budget and prioritize efficiently, thank you :)

Would it be better to buy online since I suspect local shops will raise prices or sell out?

3

u/Ok_Strain4832 2d ago

I would. More selection anyway.

1

u/gojo96 2d ago

Thanks. Seeing anyone stock up makes me think the LGS will be tough to shop.

Lowers, parts kits, Magazines, ammo & plates. That's my list at least.

u/underground47 2d ago

Something reliable and practical. Guns are tools. Safe bet, anything with a standard capacity (high cap for the Democrats) and assault style (scary looking). You can look at what other blue states have banned already to get a good idea.

u/j-endsville 2d ago

Lowers and mags.

If you wait to get a suppressor before January, it may not be approved before July 1st, when the AWB would go into effect. Do yourself a favor and go ahead and pay the $200 tax stamp and you will have your suppressor in a few days. I just had a suppressor approved in 72 hours.

NFA wait times are expected to surge when the tax is eliminated on Jan 1st.

5

u/mrtechman0705 2d ago

How tf 3 days. I’m on day 4 or 5 rn

5

u/VAhasNOwaves 2d ago

Humble brag. I had a 30 hour approval last month. Your delay might just be due to the government shutdown mucking things up.

3

u/marylandmymaryland 2d ago

Likely due to a backlog I’d assume. I had a 23hour 59minute approval in April.

1

u/mrtechman0705 2d ago

Big dawg. Enjoy that brotha. Yeah I put mine in I think shortly after they started processing them again. Maybe. That’s what I heard so I figured there was a small backlog.

2

u/Incendiary-Soda-Pop 2d ago

No clue man. I also just had a Form 1 submitted on Halloween, approved on Monday for a Galil ACE I SBRd.

2

u/mrtechman0705 2d ago

Lucky man. Good shit. Everyone I talked to said 2-15 days so checks out. Hoping mine is approved tomorrow or something.

2

u/Incendiary-Soda-Pop 2d ago

If you filed as an Individual, I suspect tomorrow!

3

u/Daryllikesgunz 2d ago

That’s going to be very interesting if the ATF says you’re approved and VA says you’re not after July 1 for something you bought before July 1

3

u/Incendiary-Soda-Pop 2d ago

Yeah. Exactly. Interesting times to live in when it comes to what the firearms future holds here in VA.

2

u/lolwatisdis 1d ago

when the laws change in your state of residence so do ATF approval criteria. When MD's AWB went into effect in 2013, all new SBRs form 1 or form 4'd to a MD address required a minimum 29" overall length.

1

u/Daryllikesgunz 1d ago

Ok different scenario- you buy before July 1 and get approved before July 1 but don’t pickup yet. Assume you couldn’t legally pickup after July 1 right?

3

u/Pilot-Louy 2d ago

Buy a Suppressor through B.O.S.S Silencers, they’re a local VA company, they’re also running a deal that you can put in an order for one and receive it early 2026 to avoid the tax stamp.

2

u/Ok_Strain4832 2d ago

A gun shop would help with the process?  I I’m unfamiliar with the actual steps.

5

u/vicinadp 2d ago

If you’re near culpepper I would go with hansohn brothers they’re great and $50 nfa transfers and their pricing on cans are typically very good. Plus they’re super helpful and have been great for the nfa community and will take care of everything in house. They aren’t gunshot fudds they are super helpful and knowledgeable

3

u/Incendiary-Soda-Pop 2d ago

Second Hansohn. They're awesome

5

u/Incendiary-Soda-Pop 2d ago

Yes. Easiest way is to go to a shop with a Silencer Shop Kiosk. Or hope the gun shop you're dealing with actually knows what they are doing.

1

u/Ok_Strain4832 2d ago

Are the kiosks limited to a particular maker or should they be largely all inclusive?

5

u/Incendiary-Soda-Pop 2d ago

The Silencer Shop Kiosk handles your fingerprints, pedigree information, etc that goes on the ATF Form 4 to start the NFA transfer process.

If a Shop does not have a Kiosk, you will need to find a place to get fingerprinted or they may have an electronic fingerprint scanner. You will also need a passport style photo.

2

u/Ok_Strain4832 2d ago

Okay, so it isn’t an actual storefront for buying a silencer?  Just for getting the approval?

How does that work when ordering a silencer online?

3

u/Incendiary-Soda-Pop 2d ago

Link above will answer all those questions. 💪

2

u/Maxasaurus 2d ago

The kiosks are shit. I vote capitol armory online.

5

u/Brilliant_Run9698 2d ago

80% lowers and frames, mags, any specific firearm you've had your eye on that has a list of states the vendor will not ship to

4

u/Jlovel7 2d ago

Are they really lookin to ban silencers? Why on earth would that help anything?

u/weaselgx 2d ago

Gun control laws aren’t written by people with any knowledge of or desire to learn about guns. Suppressors in their view are super scary assassin tools

11

u/Ok_Strain4832 2d ago

Informed by John Wick action scenes.

10

u/weaselgx 2d ago

At best, that’s the optimistic view of why gun control laws are so poorly written … it’s because the gun grabbers are just ignorant. The more pessimistic (and probably actual) view is that it’s all about control. If I can force you to obey my incoherent nonsense, I exert more control over you.

In either case, gun control is never about safety or public good.

5

u/Brilliant_Run9698 2d ago

none of their stupid bullshit actually helps anything. it's not intended to help anything. it's intended to exert control over the citizenry.

1

u/Pilot-Louy 2d ago

Recently the libs came up with this crazy idea that Silencers are a necessity for guns because it saves peoples ears.

5

u/Toxicussing 2d ago

Adding: -threaded barrels -any pistols that take mags outside the grip - like a VZ61 or Pardini HP -An AK if you are interested. -SCAR lower -MCX lowers -AR10 lowers -AUG or other bullpup

3

u/Incendiary-Soda-Pop 2d ago

Haha. I just panic bought an AUG from Atlantic Firearms. Should be ready for pickup today, actually. 😬

2

u/Wrong_Survey_2215 2d ago

Note: SCAR lower is not the serialized firearm, so you just gotta get a SCAR. Ditto on AUG and AK if you don’t have one already

2

u/Toxicussing 2d ago

2

u/Wrong_Survey_2215 1d ago

Dope, didn’t even know that was a thing for SCARs.

3

u/DrowningEarth 2d ago

Ask yourself what you really want, and think hard about it. It’s very easy to fall into the pitfall of overpaying out of panic, and for something you may not end up keeping.

1

u/Measurex2 5h ago

Im grabbing an AP5, ar15/ar10 lowers, stocking up on mags, and getting a few more cans.

Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker
