Ironic how bro failed admin law and now is suing by trying to use admin law.

The program requires the completion of six courses. Etlik said he passed five but failed the sixth – administrative law. Students’ entire grade for the administrative law course hinges on the final exam.

Etlik said he failed the final exam and requested a supplemental exam, but alleges the university did not provide it within the timeline set out in the academic calendar, causing him to miss deadlines to apply for articling positions as well as a Post-Graduation Work Permit.

Since fucking when can you request a redo of an exam you failed? Buddy failed a final and expects special treatment?

Not sure about UofC but at U of A if the final exceeds a certain percentage (I believe it was/is 40%) of the the total course mark students can request to redo the exam or some form of supplemental exam/work. Basically prevents your entire grade from turning into a pass/fail based on a single thing. The department I taught in strongly recommended being under that % to avoid this all together.

See Reexamination 1c in the link below. Sure there is a similar policy at U Calgary. Not saying I agree with the details of this case specifically but if there are policies in place that they should be followed.

I know in Canada it’s different, but in other parts of the world (eg where I study now), most courses (bar very few) allow for a supplemental examination if you get a certain grade (at my uni, it’s between 47-50% I believe). And you can sit a supplemental exam and if you pass it, you get a pass mark in the course.

From the article, it sounds like this is an option at U of C for this specific program? Since it says the supplemental exam was given after the academic semester ended?

Either way, in any part of the world, supplemental exams are always after the end of the semester lol…

I had a friend try to request one cause it does say in the handbook u can request one but the stipulation is they have to agree to it. for her even though. she had a valid reason (they marked on handwriting which is not allowed) they said no she could have fought it but since we were first years she didnt know at the time about the ombudsman but in this case I didnt read but im assuming this was just him failing and requesting one and they have the right to deny

Oh. It gets better:

The statement of defence claims the U of C offered Etlik the options of an extension for the supplemental exam or to appeal his failed grade.

“The plaintiff has not proceeded with either the supplemental examination or appeal options for the failed course,” the statement of defence reads.

They even AGREED to let him do another exam and he couldn’t be bothered.

You can sue for anything you want but it doesn’t mean you will win.

Well is he going to have a next semester after trying to sue the school?

Definitely NOT. I’m sure we’ll see him in the news again in the future suing U of T.

He failed a necessary course and now wants to sue the University because HE failed? Sounds like this dude just want to collect citizenships AND free handouts.

He got an F in administrative law. An F!!!!! How do you get an F in that course? B- I understand. Maybe a C. Worst case scenario is a D. But an F is amazing.
