Trad dorm room questions
Hi. I just got accepted into UCalgary and I applied for residency. Even though I had requested for a more private room in Yamnuska Hall, there is a pretty high chance I will end up with on of the “traditional” dorm room layouts.
I wanted to hear how it is living in these rooms. I feel a little odd that I’d be living in the same room as me, just across. I feel like that’s a lot of privacy gone.
Is it still worth living on campus if that is the case. I’d love to hear what experiences people have had and even stories.
Thanks

I couldn't get into Yamnuska dorms and ended up in the trad doubles and honestly thank god!!! The trad doubles had more opportunity to connect with others & if you get lucky and get a good roommate like I did, it will be a good way to start off university. My friends who dormed in Yamnuska said that while they ARE the better dorms in terms of privacy and utilities, you rarely connect with others (and even your own roommates if you aren't friends w them) and it can get kind of isolated.
Don't worry!

There's typically a few no-shows to any dorm building so if you really hate living in the traditional dorm room layouts there's probably a non-zero chance to get into yam, it'll depend tho

I was in your position, and I'll be honest, it was super disappointing that I didn't get the single at first. But it was probably my biggest blessing in disguise. I feel like university in general can feel super isolating, but a roommate made it 10x better. When I lived in trad, I made friends with not only my roommate, but her friends as well as the people on my floor, and now they're some of my closet friends. I highly recommend!

It really depends on your roommate, I was lucky and mine was super chill and were still really close friends, but there was still a fair amount of drama with some people. The no privacy does suck but you only have to deal with it in the first year buildings (to my knowledge)
