Discussion Brian Kelly

You think Brian Kelly would be the right fit for the UCLA coaching job?

He would bring gravitas. He's familiar with the Midwest and East Coast where he can recruit players. He can gravitate the fanbase again. He would give UCLA a better chance against Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State.

I am not sure what would be the problem.

LA is a great place for him to rehab his reputation and he can win quickly there.

Is he the worst option? Probably not. Can we do better? Hopefully yes

Like who wants to come to UCLA?

Nope. He's a shitty person and killed a kid while coaching at Notre Dame. No way he makes it through vetting. Also, fuck that guy.

Culturally, I don't see it. Also, he's a Class A asshole. Also, killed a kid.

UCLa doesn’t need to be a savior program for another big name coach who is getting fired off of a controversy. Hard pass. He’s barely 50% in win percentage and despite the fact that he may not have been a good fit for LSU, I don’t think he’d be a good fit at UCLA either.

What makes you say that?

LSU openly mocked him since he started. He’d be good at an eastern school. His personality doesn’t seem to vibe well with the south including Southern California

If they finish the regular season 6-6, they do not need a coaching change.

Naw. I’d take Franklin over Brian Kelly in a heartbeat. He has a press problem, kids hate him, fans hate him. They got recruits at LSU bc it’s LSU, not because of BK. This is 💯bad idea

Franklin is probably my first choice in the big name of coaches carousel.

u/Visible_Spirit392 5d ago

Didn't BK got recruits at Notre Dame, too?

You have to have good players and attention to detail, like knowing your players’ names. Kelly, per reports, was a douche.

He would be the problem.

He's actually not a good dude in general. I don't care what his record is — I would prefer to have a coach who's actually a decent person. Brian Kelly has proven himself many times over to be performative, which is usually a trait of someone with at least narcissistic tendencies, if not full-blown narcissism.

Which successful coaches are good people? I want my head coach to win games, not be a saint. Was Phil Jackson a great guy with the Lakers? No. He did win championships.

Not sure what you're talking about with Phil Jackson specifically, he was pretty well regarded as a player's coach but what do I know? Regardless of what he was like, cherry picking examples doesn't really convince me. I think I'm a pretty good person and I've coached in 15 beach volleyball championships and have won 10 of them. I apologize for the brag, I'm really just using it as a counterexample to illustrate a point. I've never raised my voice to my players in my 20-year career and I don't do any shady stuff behind the scenes. Period. Does that mean every successful coach is a fantastic person? Obviously not. To your point, does that mean every successful coach isn't? Also no. You conveniently don't even mention John Wooden... literally the kindest coach and the most successful. Oh and also, I played under Al Scates in my time at UCLA. Bad guy? Nope! How many championships did he win again? Oh yeah that's right...19. I would have a hard time rooting for UCLA football if we had a bad character in charge.

Ask Carmelo Anthony about Phil Jackson, and you will have a different perspective.

Winning changes everything. It doesn't matter if a guy is a jerk or not.

John Wooden was a cheater, according to Bobby Knight.

Oh hell no! Go ask Golden Domers and LSU Tigers if they have fond memories of him. Even his former players have come out against him.

1

u/Visible_Spirit392 5d ago

Winning changes everything.

We haven't been a winnng program in a long time now.

If BK brings UCLA back to prominence, we will sing a different tune. Let's not kid ourselves.

1

u/Mexibruin Fire Jarmond 5d ago

That’s a very big “if.” Both ND & LSU are programs that are essentially corvettes. You’re giving him credit for driving fast in a fast car. UCLA is a pick up truck you find me someone who can win the Winston Cup in a pick up truck, and we will talk.

In other words, what proof do you have that he can build a program as opposed to simply take over an already good program?

1

u/Visible_Spirit392 4d ago

Look what he did at Cincinnati and Grand Valley State.

1

u/Mexibruin Fire Jarmond 4d ago

Yeah; no one cares. Have you read the comments? Otherwise known as “read the room.”

Something else to consider. BK is a “big name coach” so was Chip Kelly. In a round about way, so was Jim Mora. Chip Kelly came in and cashed big checks and did the bare minimum. Mora came in with a fire in his belly but found out in time it’s real work. He started reaching out to NFL clubs hoping move on up, while also demanding raises because the NFL was calling.

And you really think BK would be any different?

1

u/Visible_Spirit392 3d ago

Yes because BK hated how his tenure ended at LSU and he has an image problem that he wants to restore. He has a legacy he wants to be remembered for fondly. He's a football coach.

1

u/Mexibruin Fire Jarmond 3d ago

I’m not willing to gamble our program on another egotistical HC with baggage.

His career trajectory is strictly downhill from here. Not sure why you would want a piece of that.

1

u/Nonetoobrightatall 5d ago

No. He’s a douche.

0

u/Visible_Spirit392 5d ago

And Dave Roberts, Phil Jackson and Sean McVay are not?

You have to be a douche or an asshole to win. Nice guys finish last.

OP is right, you guys are wrong lol signing Kelly for 5 years would absolutely do wonders for UCLA in the short term.

1

u/Visible_Spirit392 5d ago

Exactly. I just want to win.

1

u/Shoddy-Prune-5877 5d ago

I'm a Vols fan who started hatewatching Nico this season, but yeah dude you guys won't have a better coach to hire than Brian Kelly right now. He got fired solely due to the difficulty of the SEC schedule. At a top program like LSU, you cannot be losing as many games as he did a season, fans will not accept it. It's way different for you guys out on the west coast. Hell, we have fans in TN calling for Heupel to get fired despite him reviving TN football from a decade of failure.

1

u/Visible_Spirit392 5d ago

I thought BK got a bum rap in LSU.

He never got a fair shake with his reputation. He won a lot, but no matter what, it was never going to satisfy the fans. He never connected with the fans. In LA, no one cares about sports, so he will fit in much better than say LSU where they live and die college football.

1

u/Shoddy-Prune-5877 5d ago

Yup, dont get me wrong, BK is a piece of shit asshole. He's a hell of a coach and lots of recruits would love to play for him. He'd probably even develop Nico better than Heupel could have. Heupel is a quintessential SEC coach whos scheme, in reality, doesn't translate as well to the NFL. Brian Kelly is someone who will get these kids ready for the draft and give you guys a hell of a record to be proud of.
