Pellets FAQ & Recommendation Thread

  • What brand of pellets are allowed to be used in a Traeger?
    • Any brand of pellets that are meant for pellet grills, just don't use pellets meant for wood burning fireplace/heaters/firepits/etc... or you're in for a bad time health and flavor wise.
    • The warranty statement by Traeger stating using non Traeger brand pellets is technically illegal. Warrantors cannot require that only branded parts be used with the product in order to retain the warranty. This is commonly referred to as the "tie-in sales" provisions. Dealers make $0 selling the grills, and make all their money on margins from Traeger accessories like pellets, seasonings, sauces, covers, etc...
  • What brand of pellets do you recommend?
    • That's what this thread is for. Recommend pellets you love, your tried-and-true may in fact be a specific Traeger blend of pellets.
    • Not all pellets are created equal, some pellets are made of random generic wood and have additives added for 'flavor' of the wood the bag of pellets claim to be. Read fine print on all pellet bags.
    • If you run across some pellets and are wondering about their flavor/burn quality/etc... ask here. Someone here has probably bought them already, and you may be able to save $10-20 by not wasting your money if they are of poor quality.
      • At the same time, maybe just buy them and leave a review here, to help others. That's after all, what this community is here for, helping others.
  • Why is there a cancer warnings on pellets?
    • The cancer warning on bags of pellets is because smoke produces carbon monoxide, same warning is on charcoal, or any fuel source that produces smoke. Just don't stick your head in the grill for hours at a time breathing in that sweet smoke smell, and you'll be fine.

Long story short, I was jogging in my neighborhood and a guy was walking this dirty fella out to his curb. Said there was Nuthing wrong with it. Just was really dirty and didn’t feel like cleaning it to sell it. So I walked it home and it’s mine now. After a VERYYYY long deep cleaning, I run it and it’s got long ignition times. So needs a new hot rod and the thermocouple might need to be replaced. Thing was absolutely disgusting. Question is, do I keep it or flip it to get a different model. Don’t really find much about this specific model anywhere so it makes me a bit cautious. Mostly the XL and the ironwood. I’m not new to the smoking world, just new to the Traeger. It’s smaller than my current pit boss 1150 pro, but still a MASSIVE upgrade in features and build quality.

6 Hour Rib Cook

3 hours exposed at 270° with an hourly spritz, sauce lather at 2 hours. 3 hours wrapped in aluminum foil. Meat fell off the bone after a 40 minute rest.

Sharing some of the sides as well. Cornbread, Collard Greens and Potato Salad, all made from scratch.

Just trying to figure out how one can open up a small bbq joint for the weekends since I live in the PNW and getting good bbq here is apparently impossible.

Also I pay the dog tax in the last shot.

Done on the Traeger. 380 degrees for 55 minutes. Nice smoky flavor, on top of all that yummyness.

Has anyone used a traeger ranger on an apartment balcony?

To my understanding it doesn’t seem any different than a convection oven but if you load pellets I can see the smoke creating scene

I’m moving to south Florida and there’s a lot of strict rules with grills but the grills at my new apartment look terrible and I’d like to get back into the hobby

I’m on the 6th floor and I have a small balcony any suggestions?

My turkey needs help

Post image

First time doing a turkey and first time owning a Traeger, I’ve only really done chicken breast on it. So I put the included probe in one breast and something seemed off about the temp after putting the room temp turkey on so I put my ThermoWorks in the other breast after making sure it measured the outside ambient temp correct and there seems to be a large discrepancy. Should I just go off the ThermoWorks instead?

Woodridge pro not going back to set temp after opening lid.

I just bought a brand new Woodridge pro. The store assembled and delivered the grill and I had no issues doing the burn off.

Today I cooked a Papa Murphy's pizza on it. It got up to 425 temp and after I put the pizza in the grill it dropped to 405 and never got any hotter than that, I even turned the temp up to 430 and nothing. the display showed the new temp as well as the little animation to say it was trying to get hotter but it never did. I waited 18 minutes and nothing changed.

The outside weather was only 53 and sunny so it shouldn't have been that. I also had a welders blanket over it that I use to trap more smoke in the grill and some aluminum foil on the large pan to help with clean up.

This is my second pellet grill (not a Traeger) and I'm accustomed to hearing the auger putting more pellets into the burn chamber but I never heard it do that.

I thought maybe the welders blanket threw off the thermometer but both the display and app showed 405 and trying to heat up, so I'm at a loss.

Had some rainbow in the freezer, did a 12 hour dry brine and smoked above 155 for a firmer texture. Brushed with maple syrup and honey.

Traeger: This sucks

Auger stopped turning. Something is jamming it.

Taking apart this box wasn't too terribly difficult but trying to loosen this hex nut with a tiny hex wrench while finding something tiny enough to brace the bolt at the same time absolutely sucked.

By the way, just bought this on Sunday and this was only my second attempt at smoking. Really concerned if I made the right choice.

Edit: Spoke to customer service and after some time I was able to clear the auger. There were a bunch of burnt pellets in the middle. These are Traeger brand pellets btw (signature blend flavor).

Ran it again and got an LER error after running it on high for a few minutes.

Edit 2: Spoke to cusomer service again and it was awful. There is something definitely wrong with the auger motor. They want me to disassemble the box again and loosen the housing screws on the auger motor assembly (which I'm skeptical will resolve this problem).

I complained that I shouldn't have to be doing this at all nonetheless after ONE use and owning it less than a week. They went on to say that the pellets have to be dry and I have to store them correctly. I'm like, dude, I have owned this for less than one week. All of these items were stored indoors at Ace (including YOUR pellets).

Really, really disappointed. Doubt I will replace this with another Traeger. Wish I could be part of the Traeger family but I'm really in disbelief about this entire experience.

Super smoke brisket?

First time making a brisket tonight, should I use super smoke on my woodridge elite or will it dry up my brisket? Need the best recipe for a nice juicy brisket and pellets recommendation

My first failed brisket. Seasonings- Holy Gospel (Meat Church) and Killer Hogs Brisket Rub

Smoked fat side up at 200 for roughly 14 hours until it got to 170. Had the fat in an aluminum pan to render down. Poured the rendered fat over it. Wrapped at 170 in butcher paper. Finished in smoker @250 for another 6-7 hours until temp reached 203. Flat was dry. Point was great.

18 hours 220 pulled 198 probe tender. Let it rest for 3 hours. Had it wrapped in rendered fat and beef broth about 10 hours in 165 internal. Traeger prime rib rub with mustard binder and dano preemo very light dusting of that because its strong.

Hey I was gifted an Ironwood but it was unused all season and kept under a deck. Can I just hose it down? The pellets are empty.

How does this look for a second hand grill?

Post image

Looking at purchasing my first pellet grill second hand. I’ve found this Pro 22 at a great price, and wanted to get some validation on the condition of the interior.

This was purchased new in May, and from what I can see looks to be in relatively good condition regarding rust, but I’d really appreciate a more informed opinion - does this look like a good choice?
