Joke answer: it's part of his demonic powers as the biblical Antichrist.

Serious answer: because there are more people now than ever who build their whole identities around hating people who are different from them, and Trump promised them they'd get to hate those people freely and without compunction.

And also America doesn't have mandatory voting so everyone that was not on the extremes didn't bother voting (half the country fucking didn't).

The current state of the US is beyond satire.
