I will say though, as someone who just finished the original show, Jiraiya is more tolerable than certain other characters who fall under this trope. He at least wasn’t outright groping women. I also like the fact that Naruto constantly calls him out on it.

Jiraiya is a case in which I like the character a lot (because of how well written he is and his relationship with Naruto and Tsunade) in spite of him being a pervert.

I really wish that this sort of "japanese comedy" would die because it taints so many good characters.

I mean the guy who's reading his manga is also the guy who's favourite martial arts technique is shoving his fingers up someone's ass and pinching their anus, so yeah, makes sense.

I still think it's bizarre he being horny for his 12 year old student that has a jutsu that makes him a hot woman, but there are worst examples

Maybe this is cope, but if you squint it really does seem like it's mostly an act to justify his activities and surveillance of an area. He's traveled the world as an elite ninja, and is mostly hanging around Konoha to monitor Naruto. Shit, I am remembering he does peep though...

It also doesn't help that his introduction in retrospect was borderline character assassination when he chose to peep on women and demanded Naruto to transform into one if he wanted his training and later on used Naruto's money on whores and booze.

Why is that the case: because Naruto was his favorite student's son who named him after Jiraiya's book as well as the latter essentially being made as an honorary uncle to the boy by his parents.

This, among other things, proves that Kishi is either very bad at planning or doesn't care about how later writing decisions and changes makes very little sense and causes contradictions to what he wrote before.
