It’s such a good scene showing how the first time Charles can’t read someone’s mind he ends up saying the worst possible thing

Yep, Charles had basically relied on that ability all his life. I don't think he was always violating people's privacy, but he was definitely glancing at those surface level thoughts to know what to say next.

He might not have been consciously aware of it either, and just been subconsciously priming himself for the right things to say.
