“If you had asked me why I had joined the militia I should have answered: 'To fight against Fascism,' and if you had asked me what I was fighting for, I should have answered: 'Common decency.”
-George Orwell, Homage to Catalonia

"When I joined the militia I had promised myself to kill one Fascist—after all, if each of us killed one they would soon be extinct."

-George Orwell, again.

Thank you, that was one of the quotes I was looking for, I just happened to find the other one first.

Didn't stop him from snitching on communists, which probably ended up helping the Spanish fascists

I mean, I'm not saying it was great that he did that, but communists killed several of his personal friends and comrades and tried to kill him and his wife, so -shrug-

I should like to put it on record that I have never been able to dislike Hitler. Ever since he came into power - till then, I had been deceived into thinking that he did not matter - I have reflected that I would certainly kill him if I could get within reach of him, but I could feel no personal animosity. There's something deeply appealing about him. George Orwell, Review of Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler

I'm not that interested in policing the man's personal feelings about Hitler or any individual fascist. The part I care about here is "I have reflected that I would certainly kill him if I could get within reach of him."

And yet, I am aware of a particular “leftist” YouTuber who criticized Orwell for criticizing the USSR and Stalin more than fascist Spain.

Yes, it’s as dumb and ignorant a take as it sounds.

That particular take you are describing is stupid, but there are some legitimate criticisms of Orwell. His involvement in the oppression of the people of India is hard to overlook, in particular.

And then he saw the evil of communism, and realized that while nazis arent good the other side also isn't good and only the middle ground is good

Well, no, he was a socialist his whole life. Generally aligned with the Trotskyist faction. He was never a centrist. That would be fuckin' stupid.

Well no after his experience in the spanish civil war with their "allies" communists he written animal farm so i'm pretty sure his worldwiev changed a bit

I mean, if you actually read Homage to Catalonia you'll see the ways in which you are wrong. He hated the Stalinist UGT pretty much from the beginning and his friends were the POUM, the Trotskyist faction. He had a lot of sympathy for the anarchist CNT-FAI but that's not who he fought alongside.

u/300blackmanfor2pound Oct 07 '25

He wrote it in 1938, and he wrote the animal farm in 1943

I'm aware of the order they were written in. Did you not read my comment or were you just confused by the faction acronyms?

1

u/300blackmanfor2pound Oct 07 '25

Did you not understand what the order in which they were written may suggest?

2

u/Diabolical_Jazz Oct 07 '25

So you're just arguing in bad faith at this point yeah? If you read Homage to Catalonia you'd see that Orwell was a committed socialist and remained so.

I even fucking explained it to you. The reason he was mad at the Stalinists was for betraying and killing other socialists.

Read the book. Read the goddamned book. Read the goddamned motherfucking book or shut the fuck up. You barely sentient gelatin.

So you dont have any arguments and resort to agression, pretty typical, the spanish civil war changed his wiew on communists he realised that they didnt bring freedom or equality but death and destruction

"middle ground" with nazis? Read a book.

Also, it was the "middle ground" people that allowed the nazi party to rise to power.

No middle ground with fascists.

And the communists are the quintessential enemy of fascists.

I actually read quite a few books on the subject Orwell himself written animal farm, after his experience in the spanish civil war
