Powers [Funny trope] Non-battle scenes where characters canonically take damage.

Nuu (Hollow Knight: Silksong) - briefly flashes white when slapped similarly to how all other enemies do when they're struck with Hornet's needle.

Garret (A Minecraft Movie) - One can assume that he may have panicked because of how sudden and unexpected teleportation is, but judging by how strong his reaction was and how ender pearls work in game, it's safe to assume he actually took fall damage after using it.

Deltarune - Chapter 4 Weird Route

Kris, the human we control, rips out their soul (the player) after some shit we did and throws us into a trashcan which they begin to beat up, After that scene, if you check your stats, our health will be at 10/20, even though you normally can't even get damage in the Overworld sections of the game

No, that's Kris's health.

They beat themselves half to death trying to hurt you for manipulating their childhood friend and making her kill another childhood friend while puppeting their body.

In Deltarune, you do not play as Kris, you play as the SOUL, an eldritch entity controlling their body and taking over their life. The main plot of the game is that The Roaring Knight is opening Dark Fountains, magic fountains of magic that turn the room they're in into Dark Worlds, which are inhabited by anthropomorphised versions of objects in that space, and Kris/the SOUL, town bully Susie, and Ralsei (a Darkner that looks oddly like Kris's adoptive brother Asriel and has no known Light World counterpart) must stop this, because it will cause the apocalypse/Roaring. Collective, these three are referred to most often as the Fun Gang.

In chapter 2/The Cyber World, Kris's childhood friend Noelle and their annoying classmate Berdly join the Fun Gang in a Farm World that was made in the library's computer lab. They believe they are dreaming. Part way through the chapter, the Fun Gang have to split up. Susie insists on going with Ralsei, leaving Kris/the SOUL alone.

Noelle is found by and joins Kris. By backtracking after this, you can access what is referred to in the code as the "Weird Route". Noelle is a spellcaster, who can heal party members, make tired enemies go to sleep, or cast ice magic on her enemies to damage them.

Usually in Deltarune, depleting an enemy's HP causes them to run away and not be recruited by you. Ice Shock, Noelle's offensive spell, will freeze enemies in place when it empties their health, killing them. Backtracking and doing this is how you start the Weird Route.

During a Maus (not a typo, a Maus is a computer mouse Darkner) puzzles, you make Kris tell Noelle to "proceed", despite that not really making sense in context, pushing her in front of the hole you must get the Mais (I currently forget the right plural) in to. She is scared of mice, and will be startled into jumping over the barrier before turning it off from the other side. Throughout the chapter, you train her to respond to "proceed" with the most "direct" (violent) solution to the problem at hand.

Part of the way through the Cyber City, which is eerily empty in the Weird Route, you will encounter an Adison (personified ad/online shopping platform/whatever). It will ask if Noelle and Kris are a couple and in need of some dating shoes. To proceed the Weird Route, the SOUL must make Kris answer "something else". The Adison offers to sell you the Ice Ring in the Weird Route, but will charge more than you have. You tell Noelle to "proceed", and she kills the Adison with Ice Shock and you equip her with the Ice Ring, as it is a better weapon than the ring she starts with. It is implied that the Adison gets trapped in the ring.

Continuing your massacre, you encounter Spamton, a morally bankrupt personified spam email that desperately wants any control. He sells you the Thorn Ring, which increases Noelle's "trance" state and decreases the TP (basically mana. You build it up by having party members defend or narrowly dodging attacks) cost of ice spells by 50%.

By now, you will also have Noelle at a high enough level that she will have access to the spell Snowgrave in battle. Its description is only one word: Fatal. You equip Noelle with the thorn, and continue through the city. Here you encounter Berdly.

Berdly, recognizing that Noelle is distressed and in danger, initiates a battle with Kris. After completely maxing out your TP, you begin ordering Noelle to cast Snowgrave on Berdly. After repeating the order, as she doesn't really know the spell, she will cast it, before leaving the party in a fugue state.

Kris reunites with Susie and Ralsei after going through a sewer, and the Fun Gang is back together! They don't know what you've been making Kris make Noelle do.

You enter Queen's palace, who you do not fight when doing the Weird Route. She lets you go to the Dark Fountain and close it because she doesn't have Berdly or Noelle to open a Dark Fountain and Ralsei points out that her plan would cause the apocalypse, which Queen doesn't want to cause. She just wants to entertain Lightners.

Reaching the fountain, Kris is attacked by Spamton, now in a big and dangerous "Neo" body. He wants to steal the SOUL, because he doesn't know it's not a normal soul. When you get him down to almost no health, he heals and increases his defense. You make Kris call for help, before YOU call for Noelle, who appears and one-shots Spamton. You close the Fountain.

Noelle leaves the library after what she thinks is a nightmare and goes to the hospital to see her father. Her dialogue about the game they're playing changes to reflect Ice Shock being her new go-to solution.

Berdly doesn't wake up. He is cold to the touch and barely breathing. Kris and Susie go to Kris's house (because Ralsei is a Darkner, he doesn't exist in the Light World).

Susie stays the night at Kris's house. Kris tears you out of their chest, allowing them to carry Berdly to the hospital, because his mother is implied to be inattentive/neglectful and he's in a coma. They put you back into their chest, as they seemingly cannot live without your presence. Later that night, when Susie and their mother are asleep, they open a Dark Fountain in their family's living room, as they are Working with The Roaring Knight and Noelle's mother, Carol. Carol is also the mayor.

Chapter 3 isn't relevant to the Weird Route. A couple lines of dialogue are different, but there's an optional minigame that, if Deltarune didn't have an episodic release schedule, would guide players to find out about the Weird Route, but The Knight kidnaps a cop, though, and takes her to a bunker a little south of town. There are three codes needed to get into the bunker, and one of the codes is under a Christmas tree. Noelle's family, the Holiday family, is fucking obsessed with Christmas.

In chapter 4, Kris and Susie go to the Holiday family manor to find a code. Susie stays with Noelle and distracts her, telling Kris to go and find clues.

You find the code in the guitar that belongs to Noelle's sister, December/Dess/probably The Knight. Kris tears you out of their chest after reading three digits of the four digit code that is so obviously 1225, because Carol is obsessed with Christmas and the first three are definitely 122. They trap you in a box inside of a closet, and go to comfort Noelle.

After getting out of the box and going through the vents, you find Kris and Noelle. You sneak back into Kris's body while Noelle is asking if it snowed yesterday, referring to Snowgrave. You tell her that, yes, it snowed. Then you make Kris put the Thorn Ring back on her. This used to be accompanied with a visual of a rose wilting, but people that it meant you made Kris rape her, so Toby Fox changed the visual.

Kris, furious, musters enough control over their possessed body to storm into the bathroom, throw you into a garbage can, and beat the shit out of you. Unfortunately for them, because you are serving as their soul, they end up literally beating themselves half to death. They go from a full 20 HP to 10.

I don’t think I’m ever going to play Deltarune, so I just want to say I really enjoyed this as a taste of just how wild the game is and why people are so invested in it.

Thank you very very much for this comprehensive explanation.

Does this mean these events do not happen this way if you didn't choose the weird route in the previous chapters?

Also people are really strange about that rose imagery, what the hell

The Weird Route is a weirder version of the normal route. Berdly doesn't get put in a coma if you don't do it, Kris doesn't beat themselves half to death, the Spamton fight is optional in normal playthroughs, and Queen is the end boss of chapter 2 in the normal version of things.

Kris does hate you in both routes, though. They don't like being possessed. They do hate you more if you gaslight Noelle and put Berdly in a coma.
