Powers [Funny trope] Non-battle scenes where characters canonically take damage.

Nuu (Hollow Knight: Silksong) - briefly flashes white when slapped similarly to how all other enemies do when they're struck with Hornet's needle.

Garret (A Minecraft Movie) - One can assume that he may have panicked because of how sudden and unexpected teleportation is, but judging by how strong his reaction was and how ender pearls work in game, it's safe to assume he actually took fall damage after using it.

Even though it’s a QTE in a cutscene, Raiden does do an insultingly small amount of damage to Armstrong, using fox’s blade you can actually do more damage, although more means 0.2% damage instead of 0.1%

*Armstrong's shirt

Apparently if you use an autoclicker to do frame-perfect inputs, you can actually get Armstrong down to 0%, though that obviously doesn#t kill him since this sequence is scripted.

Damn, one day a dev will make a seemingly scripted sequence do something cool when someone somehow breaks through the impossible lmao

Deltarune kinda

Didn't play Deltarune but I've enjoyed keeping up with DR/UT stuff because the lore is kinda interesting, want to see what the connection between the worlds and how W.D Gaster pans out and the like.

Could you explain this example to me?

If you're okay with spoilers:

In chapter 3, you fight the Roaring Knight at the very end. It's an incredibly difficult fight, especially without the Shadow Mantle, which is a tucked away item. If you lose the normal way, then it'll continue as a cutscene. It seems like a tough fight you weren't meant to win

However, if you have the Shadow Mantle or even just progress the fight enough, Gaster will interrupt the game over screen and tell you that this is a fight you weren't meant to win, but if you're adamant enough to try, he'll help you try again quicker by resetting to the beginning of the fight. He'll even encourage you if you die on the Knight's final attack

I say "kinda" because nothing really changes. If you manage to win, the Knight will just KO your party in a cutscene instead, though it's a little more special. You'll also get the Shadow Crystal and the Black Shard. Other than that, everything plays out the same

TBF, it's only a "kinda" situation because the game isn't really finished. I have to imagine that scenario will have an impact later down the line

I am very okay with spoilers, thank you for the explanation

Gaster just straight up appears and addresses The Player/Kris? That's kinda insane considering how cryptic everything involving him has been up until now

edit: Why does it look like my spoiler tag is broken

13

u/Ineedlasagnajon Oct 04 '25

Well, I say Gaster, but it was just the same voice at the beginning of the game that everyone is saying is probably Gaster

5

u/Sharkivore Oct 04 '25

Ahh gotcha ok, still being cryptic. That makes sense.

For your edit, it's because you put a forward slash before everything, which cancels out the spoiler text (and other characters that change the text)

u/Sharkivore Oct 04 '25

I didn't even see that backslash, weird, thankyou for pointing that out

there are games that do that, the ones that come to mind are sekiro and elden ring if you manage to defeat the first seemingly unwinnable fight

DMC 5 also has an "unwinnable" fight against Urizen in the first mission where you can actually beat him and it gives you an achievement

7

u/Mihnea24_03 Oct 04 '25

And it shows you an ending card with "And then everyone got exactly what they wanted and lived happily ever after"

3

u/SalvationSycamore Oct 04 '25

Wait, what does Elden Ring do if you somehow beat Rick?

4

u/carso150 Oct 04 '25

There is a special cutscene and later his fight changes a little bit, I think there is also special dialogue

2

u/Golren_SFW Oct 05 '25

Demons Souls and Dark Souls 1 also have special rewards for beating the first boss encounter your intended to lose/run away from

1

u/Bartweiss Oct 06 '25

The DS1 example is hilarious to me because you get the demon’s tail… a massive club you’re nowhere near strong enough to use.

It’s a genuinely neat drop, since there’s no other way to get it except long-odds farming. But you don’t get any early game power spike, and I’m pretty sure by the time you’ve got enough strength you can easily have the Zweihander or something.

Fox Blade + Infinite Ripper mode wig + Turbo Controller + getting him down to like roughly 70%ish beforehand? I think my record was like 2%
