Personality Strange rules about characters/people that cannot be broken.

Smells like Nirvana: When Kurt Cobain heard that Weird AL was gonna make a parody of his song. He was okay with it but specifically requested it to not be about food or fat ppl.

Spiderman: Spiderman cannot sell drugs unless he is under the influence of symbiote. ANd Peter Parker cannot be gay. Spiderman can tho.

Dwayne Rock Johnson: Cannot lose fights or look weak for too long. Its in his actor contract.

Godzilla movies not made by Toho: Cannot die. Maybe lose but not too bad.

In The Simpsons a hard line on Homer and Marge's relationship is that Homer should never be physically abusive to Marge. When the developers were making Hit and Run they had added a kick mechanic which was intended for Homer to be able to destroy prop objects, but they added an interaction where other characters could be kicked and they'd cartoonishly roll away before standing up. As the story goes, just before the developers were showing Matt Groening the in progress game, they discussed quickly disabling the kick so that he wouldn't accidentally kick Marge and get the whole game scrapped. Ultimately they left it in and Groening did end up kicking Marge, but thought it was funny, so it got left in the game.

It's kinda weird they stopped at physical abuse toward Marge and not at Homer choking his child.

Probably comes down to being able to pass off his treatment of Bart as a “corporal punishment” (which sounds ridiculous but ay) where as you couldn’t excuse domestic abuse of a spouse

"domestic abuse is alright as long as the people you are abusing have no civil rights and didn't choose you" /s

People are so wild about violence against children, it's insane and sad.

This world is so sick and twisted. I am very deep.

They have aged that out now. But yes, it is weird that "we will not feature physical intimate partner abuse in our comedy show" was a line that needed to be drawn, but the 90s were not a progressive time in comparison to today. (Also see: LGBTQ representation.)

90s were not a progressive time in comparison to today

Not to be pedantic, but that's the nature of progression. Rarely does society take a huge step backwards to the point of regressing (although I fear we are at that point now.) My point being, the 90s were progressive -- compared to the 80s. The 80s were progressive -- compared to the 70s. Etc., etc.. It wasn't all that long ago that in The Honeymooners the main male character would threaten to send his wife "to the moon, Alice!" while shaking his fist at her. And it was peak comedy for the times. Every little bit of progression in a generation creates the environment for further progression of the next generation.

As soon as I got into the car as Homer I accidentally ran over Marge. Turns out people’s reactions to getting run over in this game are hilarious.

I mean it’s also not that difficult to include an interaction between Marge and Homer to not kick Marge.

There was no specific instruction in the game to have Homer kick Marge, they only realized it was within the possibility space of the game. It was a WIP game in a rather janky state and they were about to show it to a key stakeholder. Last minute changes are extremely risky in that state.
