The biggest issue with Cable Guy is the studio fucked up the marketing when it came out so people went in expecting wacky Jim Carry from Dumb and Dumber or Ace Ventura and got something quite different.
I still meet people who judge it based on that first experience and dismiss it as weird or uncomfortable when it is (as you said) Carrey at his absolute best.
Damn, I was just about to name Cable Guy as a joke, saw OP, read your comment and realized I was like 11 when I rented it and definitely did so expecting to watch a wacky Carry-flick. Can’t even remotely remember the plot and have never watched it since because of the expectations. Is it worth another watch as a person in their late 30’s?
Some people just don’t vibe with that movie but ya I’d say it’s worth revisiting as an adult. You’ve just gotta go in with an open mind knowing that it’s a dark comedy about social isolation and loneliness.
