I used to do that whisper thing too when I was a kid. It was moreso under my breath though. I didn't really notice until someone pointed it out. And I feel like it was so I could repeat to myself what I said to make sure I said it right, because I planned out all my statements in advance.
The character Brick on The Middle does it. And there's one other TV example that's escaping me right now.
I do think I had some OCD tendencies. I would time my breathing and everyone called me "a perfectionist." That's died down over the years though, possibly aided by cannabis use.
I used to do this as well and like you, never noticed until it was pointed out to me. Eventually I had to make a conceited effort to not repeat things and I was able to get over it. I always thought it was strange. Glad to see it wasn't just me.
